If your dune buggy is a two stroke, well it's a different story all together. Two strokes need back pressure to run otherwise they are gutless altogether as the compression is leaked out through the exhaust outlet and needs backpressure in those motorbike mufflers to do the job.
However as for 4 stroked engines, this is a big debate. 4 stroke shouldn't need backpressure as you reckon the exhaust valves should do the job. But it's been proven though that if you run a car without any manifolds, the motor runs like shit. Then if you simply bolt on you exhaust manifold the motor runs a whole lot better. Then people say the more backpressure in the exhaust the better. But why do then do you go the trouble of fitting extractors and straight through, mandrel bent exhaust systems.
But apparently the more back pressure the better torque you receive.
We will see as someone else who might have more experience on this subject maybe able to answer your question.
