There is a noise in the dash like air escaping (hissing noise). You think that might be what you mentioned then?

No, top switch does that, lower controls heat.
If it has the rod, its the heating device.
The hissing is escaping of vaccumm somewhere. Its usually at the back of the switch but might not be. It isnt a dash out job, just most of center console. Most of the lines can be acessed from the font of the core.
Just need to find where its leaking pressure.
The lines are the thin plastic coloured tubes, not actual coolant lines. They control internal vents with vaccum pressure. Check the connector at the back of the panel first, makes sure its on properly. It has a habit of coming off again when you put the panel back into the console. double check it!
Then worry about lines. The one nearest the drivers foot well comes loose ofter, check it first. Its next to the heater control rod. Youc an see it without having to remove anything.
