Question aircon hasn't been used for a few years

Gday guys

I've got a VN 1990 off my grandfather who hasn't used the aircon for several years (it worked fine before he stopped using the car regularly).

Am I looking at a complete overhaul of the A/C do you reckon? Compressor, hoses, etc etc.

Any ideas on how much approximately would it cost if the system's likely to be all dried out and dodgy?

Also if there's any way I can test various bits to double check their (non)functionality so I don't get ripped off.

I'm trying to work out if it's worth fixing the aircon, or even sticking with the car!

Thanks for any pointers.

There is a good chance some seals have dried out but maybe not. I think the only way to know for sure is to have it tested or regassed and checked for leaks. I take it you have tried the A/C and it doesn't work.
The only thing is you will need to have it converted to take the new gas and I am unsure of what is involved there. The gas it used to take is no longer available. Best bet is to speak to some refrigeration mechanics.

This happened to me when I bought my car.

It sat for 10 years without being used.

Anyway, I just about needed everything replaced (including the compressor) except for the heater core under the dash. Everything was retrofitted for the new refrigerant.

It will cost you close to $2,000 for the job. If your heater core is stuffed and your dash needs to come out, it will be closer to $3,000.

Close to $2000?! Okay, steep. I live in stinking hot Darwin, too...

It's gonna make me look into how much I could test and replace some of the parts myself. Thanks.
