hey all who in adelaide does the interior lights and dash light purple as im wanting to do it to my car
Q: What's wrong with purple or pink?
A: Let's tackle these one at a time. Purple (or violet, or mauve) is one of those colours which the human eye doesn't respond well to. The sensitivity of our eyes reduces towards the ends of the visible spectrum (red at the low end, violet at the high end) and this means that the actual output intensity of these "end colours" must be much higher for us to perceive the same level of visible brightness. Red LEDs are OK for this, because remarkably high intensity devices are available - purple however, are not of sufficient intensity. Additionally, purple devices are only available in 5mm leaded package - no 3mm, 10mm, or SMD devices are available. Pink devices are available in most package types, but these are not a true pink LED - they're white devices, with a pink filter in the lens. (additionally, I'm not certain why someone would want their control/instrument lighting in pink anyway - sorry girls!)

Ummmm... Thanks for looking at this one for me Maci.
However, I do need to qualify one point here - and maybe update the FAQs... The purple devices are now available in the surface mount packages as well - and in fact I have bought a few of them to experiment with.
The first thing I MUST point out about purple LEDs is that they contqain a large amount of UV (or Ultra-Violet) - in fact, there's much higher intensity of UV radiated by these than there is visible purple. In case there are some out there who aren't aware of this fact, UV is not very good for your eyes! At night your pupils are wide open, allowing a flood of UV radiation over your retinae - not conducive to a long life of good eyesight...
Secondly, there is still the problem of relatively lower intensities, combined with our own human limitations (the sensitivity point raised in the FAQ), which makes purple a very bad option in my opinion.
I know it would look really nice, but so does a great suntan.... The melanoma problems that come with that make it a little less appealing though... (apologies if that comment causes any offence to the "bronzed" among us...)
Lastly, whilst I haven't tried this, the one thing about UV is that it will make certain colurs flouresce quite brightly. Now the scale markings, the engraving on the backlit switches, and everything elase except the LCDs, is WHITE. What happens when UV hits wite? It glows up - bright white. So there's a VERY good chance that when using UV LEDs the actual "lighting up" parts will be the white colour flourescing anyway! (I must give that a try actually.... report to follow.)
