Default ASR interior light conversions and audio mod longevity query

    Hey Guys

I've just discovered ASR products online and must say I am really, really intrigued. I have just picked up a VY II Berlina and beginning to formulate my modification plans. I've read all the FAQs, price lists and a few forum posts talking about Greg's attention to detail and professionalism which are all very promising.

However, I live in WA and realise the WA installer is out of action for a while but this will let me do a bit more research. The only questions I have remaining pertain to the longevity of the work (both lighting and audio mods).

My lay understanding is LEDs usually last longer than 'normal' globes, is this generally the case for these conversions? Specifically, how have the conversions from a few years ago aged?

For those with the 4 channel RCA out mod to the factory head unit, how has your system lasted? Is the sound quality decent enough? I'm basically hoping to use a 4 channel amp with some 6.5" splits and 6x9s I was using in my old VX with an alpine head unit which I was very satisfied with.

    Cheers for any feedback

I had the true RCA's done to my vz sv6 about a year ago. i have a 5 channel amp running a set of rockford fosgate splits in the front, pioneer 6 by 9's in the parcel shelf and my 12" kicker sub.

The result? Is nothing short of amazing. It changed everything. You honestly cannot put it in words, and it is still exactly the same today as it was last year. The quality of the RCA is second to none. Everyone that has ever been in my car reckons is the best sound system theyve ever heard in a car. And i blame phreddy's work, because before then it was jus another loud car. Now it is a loud, QUALITY car with so much clarity in it it hurts sometimes. It literally makes people smile and im not joking.

Hope that helps, thats all ive had done from phreddy-so can't comment on lighting, but only heard good things.

    Cheers

I have a vy2 berlina, and the mods were done about a year and a half or so ago, maybe more. the stereo mod is great, the sound has never cut out or anything, its a flawless mod, phreddy's really got it down pat! my stacker itself is not as reliable (spits discs out when i turn it on, a seperate issue). One day i'll replace it with a double din touch screen, perhaps when someone gives me one for free. heh

I've had 2 leds blow, who knows why. all leds are white.

... and they shouldn't have blown Cam.

I do apologise Mate, for being hard to contact when we were talking before - I was in the middle of that bloody training course, and was totally flat out. Please give me a call or drop a line, and I'll arrange with you to fix that.

To answer your question Anwyll, yes indeed LEDs have a MUCH longer lifetime than globes. Typically 50,000 hours. Yes they do drop off in their intensity in the last part of their life, but at even half life they've still out-lasted your car. If any LEDs fail on the jobs I have done, I will replace them without question. I realise that's difficult with you in WA.... However, I do source my LEDs from GOOD suppliers, and have made sure they meet certain quality requirements. I can actually get them much cheaper than I do, but the quality of these ones can be below acceptable.

Having said that, I do get the very odd LED which fails, but it's not a significant number given the number of them I've used. The other advantage is that many of the items from factory are in fact still illuminated with globes - when this is all done, everything is LEDs. (things like the headlight switch, trip computer buttons, back door window switches, ignition switch ring...)

I also wish to point out that the relationship between Ant and I is such that I pass him the WA jobs, and that's about it. Now that I'm doing this for real, I need to make that distinction for legal reasons if nothing else. Anthony does lovely work, that's why I recommend him - we have collaborated on certain design principles and shared the results, so we both win. Bearing in mind that this work is about 90% labour content, then please know that I wouldn't recommend just anyone to do this.

In fact, if you'd like my recommendation now, hang in there until Ant recovers (hope you're feeling OK Mate, by the way...) and work out what you're after. I'm very happy to do the work on a "back-and-forth" basis if you're that keen, I suppose if there is anything which goes flaky on you I could work out with Ant regarding getting it solved. This is of course all hypothetical, as the vast majority of these conversions never suffer a problem.

Anyhow, over to you I guess.

    Thanks for the quick responses.

I'm happy to wait until Ant is recovered and back on the job. I did just pick the car up 2 days ago and have plenty of other things to do like putting my old rims on, lowering it and a few other bits and pieces

As I said in the OP I have read just about everything on your website and the stickies in this forum which only encouraged me more and I'm happy to pay for quality, baring a disaster, I plan on rolling around in this car for at least 5 years. I'm pretty keen to hear my speakers and amp with this mod to the factory head unit (although I think it may have an issue with my home burned cds, started skipping after about 20 minutes today).

I'll defininantly be in touch. From your phrasing Phreddy I order the kits from you and then contact Ant to book the install once they arrive? If this is the case I could possibly get myself closer to the front of the queue by ordering the gear prior to Ant being ready to start work again

I had the first Dash Mod Phreddy ever did (other than his own car) in my VZ SV6, and it worked almost flawlessly, with the exception of the headlight switch blue LED which started flickering just before I sold the car mid last year. When things settle down here I'll be getting the low-level outs in the VE done so I can connect up the 4 chan amp and rear speakers
