happy New Year Commode forum fans,it would appera that the new year has brought it's own set of troubles to my VZ crewy ute, radio was working fine last night on the drive home from work,.......but this morning things have changed, twas just toodling down the road about 15 clicks, when about 5 minutes into the drive the radio self changes from FM1 to FM2 then to CD and all over like it was scanning?WTF I thinks to self, pulled up and turned the ignition off and retsrted the car, went fine for 5 or 10 minutes then back to hunting all over the damn shop, does anybody have any idea on what to do?should I do a reset on the stereo or what?
Any help appreciated folks.
Cheers Phil
sounds like the mode button on the steering wheel is stuck down, or the wire for it is pinched under the horn pad.
the mode button on the setting wheel isn't really a button with direct link to the radio. It simply produces a voltage which the radio's computer interprets and performs the request./
it is common for vy and vz steering wheel buttons to actually operate different functions as the get older and full of dust. EG. pressing mute, may make the volume increase. and pressing NEXT may make the mute activate.
Remove the horn and disconnect the steering wheel controls. then test. make sure you plug all the wires into the airbag before testing as without the wires connected and the battery connected it will trigger an SRS fault
which will require a visit to Holden or a TEch 2 to fix.
Always disconnect the battery before removing anything from your car....

Question.....how hard is it to remove the horn button to do this test,as the sereo had a major hissy fit coming home the other night, and I have now pulled the fuse to it as I was going to smash the bloody annoying thing because it was turning on/off at will and all the controls were nuts.
Cheers Phil
i wouldnt test the head unit with the air bag still connected with power as u would b risking it 2 depoly, almost like a ticking time bomb lol
Try wat spoolin said tho disconnect the battery and take out the airbag fuse aswell 4 safety and let the car sit there 4 half hour or so 2 make sure theres no power there at all.
The horn pad itself just uses spring clips that u can see on the back of the steering wheel so release them 1 at a time and after u got the air bag out (put aside) still conected just disconnect the steering wheel controls loom and put it all back 2gether, then test and see if its still doin it. If so then the problem may lay elsewhere but chances r u'll b able 2 rule out the controls or not i rekon.
they do have a button switch inside but as spooling was saying they send an ohm reading 2 the unit 2 tell it wat 2 do, from memory i think its 1.2k ohms 4 the mode button.
