Q: What's wrong with purple or pink?

A: Let's tackle these one at a time. Purple (or violet, or mauve) is one of those colours which the human eye doesn't respond well to. The sensitivity of our eyes reduces towards the ends of the visible spectrum (red at the low end, violet at the high end) and this means that the actual output intensity of these "end colours" must be much higher for us to perceive the same level of visible brightness. Red LEDs are OK for this, because remarkably high intensity devices are available - purple however, are not of sufficient intensity. Additionally, purple devices are only available in 5mm leaded package - no 3mm, 10mm, or SMD devices are available. Pink devices are available in most package types, but these are not a true pink LED - they're white devices, with a pink filter in the lens. (additionally, I'm not certain why someone would want their control/instrument lighting in pink anyway - sorry girls!)

Sorry im just wondering why the purple is a problem im really not trying to sound like a smartass but i will probably come across as i am, apologies in advance if i do.

all i want to know is why purple is such a bad colour. as my brother owns a standard BA XR6 and its dash lighting is all purple and doesnt seem to be a problem. if they work fine on there why is it a problem for other vehicles or is the lighting a different type? (i really know nothing about this i only know that his is purple..)

i think this is 1 left 4 Greg 2 answer/confirm coz i havent yet worked on any fords and i think Greg did some years ago? Anyways as 4 the purple LEDs they r pretty much UV LEDs so as explained they do strain ur eyes more and can do some damage in the long run. As also stated the LEDs we use rnt available so 2 combat this the only other way really is 2 use "filters" which im assuming is wats done in the ford ur talkin bout? which would actually use say a white LED so it wont b harmful in any way.

So 2 some up if u want purple in ur car u'll more then likely need custom dial facias made up that have the purple film on the back.

so wont look anywhere near as nice as if i was to use only LEDs and will cost alot more..

hey wrx. just wondering.. i know you said the lighting needs to have a film for purple.. but is it possible for me to have everything white buttons with a both of my dash screens purple... or is it same thing?

wen u say dash screens do u mean ur LCD screens??

im not sure if they are lcd.. LOL im pretty retarded when it comes to this kinda thing... umm the screen in the middle of the cluster.. and the cd display unit?

Yeah those r LCD screens, Same applies here they'll need a purple film/difuser under the LCD screens 2 create the purple colour. Under those LCD screens white LEDs would have 2 b used still.

If u want it done im sure Greg could work somthing out 4 ya so contact him since hes a lil closer 2 home 2 u.

can you guys make a purple screen or how would i go about it... just for the LCDs?

i cant see y it couldnt b done if the parts required r easy enough 2 source, it'll b a trial and error run tho as its not been done b4 so it may take a lil more time 2 do than usual 2 get the correct lighting brightness and colour that u desire, but again man contact Greg and ask these questions directly as he'll b doing the work 4 u
