Hey guy's, i brought these Sony Split's,XS-D170SI, without listening to them (yeah stupid i know) i ordered them online, because i was getting a good deal on them, retail is $269 at Ryda -$299 Strathfield. I didnt bother hunting down a set in a store to listen to because i figured for the money they were worth, they couldnt be that bad, well, THEY ARE !!
I don't know if im not tuning them properly or something, I'm giving them each 60 RMS as there rated, and honestly they sound like shit !! Has anyone had these before, or heard them, and yes they are genuine items, not fakes, they were purchased directy through Sony.
I've spoken to Sony, and all they could come up with, was that my expectations of the speakers themselves, was too high, and that i was most likely pushing them too hard, and that they're more of a sound quality speaker, hence it's lower RMS rating.....![]()
How have you got them installed? Is the mounting location solid?
For that sort of money i would hope they sound better than the Response kevlar splits and similar to the other brand-name splits (Pioneer, Alpine etc) in the same price range.

yeah there fitted properly, Front doors, angled firberglass spacer, tweeter's are just above the where the seatbelt comes out....

That's what i thought, which is why i didnt think it was nessacary to hear them first, i asked a guy at Ryda, he said their's better Splits on the market for that price, ad that they wouldnt have been one of his reccomendations...
what, the tweeters are mounted on the B pillar behind the front seats?
150db in a commodore =
Front doors...
might have to just cut my loss, and use them as rear fills....
what do you mean when you say near where there seatbelt comes out?
Still, it dosent matter that much....if youre really not happy with them either sell or use them as rear fill![]()

on the door pillar, where the belt comes out
No, no, no.....thats a terrible place to mount them. You want the sound to come from in front of you......and especially not a place thats near your ear.
Not even a $1000 set of speakers will sound good with the tweeter mounted there mate
Dont take offence or anything.....just some friendly advice![]()

so you reckon it's just the tweeter placement, ?? what about putting the tweeter's on those sections where the side mirrors are....
Much better location...also make sure the tweeter adjustment on the crossover is at minimum (be it -3db or -6db) as the tweeter will be closer to you than the woofer will be, so you wanna compensate for that a little.
But i dont know, maybe you like your music with more treble? just have a play with those settings and the ones on your head-unit too![]()

I'll give it a go, and see how it sounds. I was just thinking i was shifting the front stage back a little, because i also have type S 4's up in the dash....
I'd disconnect the 4"s in the dash so you can hear just the splits for the time being.

i had everything disconected, so i was just playing the splits, i'll have another look tommorow, and move the tweeters around, it may just need some fine tuning, or some more power!!![]()
Are u using an amp dude?
There is no such thing as stupid questions, Only stupid people.
Yeah, 6o watts rms each....
what amp and how many watts and is that amp powering your sub, rear 6X9's and the front splits?
There is no such thing as stupid questions, Only stupid people.
Sony, 60 x 2 to the splits,I have seperate amp for the sub, and seperate 4 channel, for the top front and rears...
ok, could u adjust the frequency filter range on the 4 channel for the splits? also u could try the HPF(high pass filter) for the front splits it will limit the ouput frequency of the front speakers stopping them from distorting with low bass frequencys
There is no such thing as stupid questions, Only stupid people.
I moved the tweeters around, didnt really make any difference, just changed the direction of the sound.. I've listened to them now with everything else on, and it's not so bad, but yeah they are only rated at 60 RMS, so i think im just expecting too much from them. ( the 4's that i have in the dash at rated at 60 also, which was my main reason for buying the Sony splits, being i wouldn't have to much around tuning the amp..)
they cant be that bad can they?
Thier not so bad now with everything else connected, maybe i was just expecting too much from them when i was just playing them on thier own...
how do they sound bad? Harsh treble or distorted bass or what?
