Hey guys, im up for a new parcel shelf after ive hacked mine up one too many times
Now ive noticed that with either VR/VS that the factory speaker grills are closer to the cabin, than in the earlier VN/VP versions...? Can a later model shelf be fitted to the VP? and would there be much involved in mounting a 6, or 6.5, to take place with the factory grill location on it?![]()
I would say the holes in the metal are located in different spots too if the grilles are in different spots, but i could be wrong there.
If by install 6/6.5s into the parcel shelf you mean screwed to the metal then either way you'll be able to mount them in there but the grilles in the parcel shelf may not line up properly....their rears anyway so shouldnt be a huge deal.
Why not just go with a VN/VP parcel shelf?

yeah the factory holes in the metal are in a different location.. Im looking at a later model shelf so i can add some splits, but have a completely stock appearcance..But i dont like how on the VN/VP shelf, the speaker grills are so far back, i would never mount speakers there, ona VR/VS unit, the grills are much closer to the cabin. The more i think about it, i dont think it can be done. I might just look at re-trimmnig a VN/VP shelf to suit..
It'll fit. Its just 1 inch too short. As for speaker holes, grab a small mesh cover (from the wreckers), a dremel and some glue.
Also you will need a VR/VS high mount stop light and bracket.
hmm, sounds like a lot of work, i'm might just get a standard VN/VP shelf without the grills, and re-trim it, and just use the Sony grills....Your idea sounds good on paper Stocky, but i'd most likely **** it up lost most things i attempt. For example, i took me 3 parcel shelves to fit my 6x9's...![]()
make your own out of MDF, it will sound better than any stock shelf, your speakers will have a better frequency response too, if you alreay have the holes for speaker magnets cut in your chassis you wont have to buy/make pods like I did, just screw them straight into theMDF.

Dont all VP+ commodores have the holes as standard? I mean they have the holes but have peices of sheet metal spot welded in to cover them up if no rears were fitted from the factory.

my old vn had 6" holes in it so i'm guessing you're right sir
Yeah sorry VN+ haha.

yeah they all have the 6 inch holes, some are spot welded in depending on which model you have. But is there really any point in mounting a decent pair of speakers that far back?
Couldnt have said it better myself.

i wouldn't really say it's custom... Splits are going in the back because im pissing the 6x9's off... but i just want to move the speaker location a little further forward. But i think i might just take the easy way out, and just get a VP shelf with the factory grills, and just use the factory holes and be done with it..Wont sound as good, but means i wont have to frig around with it..and i'll probably just mount the tweeters in the hoodlining retainers...
hope you didn't cut up the metal shelf when you where trying to fit the 6 x 9's. quickest way to get a perminate defect. police and regency dont like cut metal, something to do with structial integrety??
I wouldnt call it perminate. But it is a structural defect. My VN has a cut shelf because the previous owner decided to install 6x9's the bad way. Im just going to make up some thin metal plates to fit over the cut holes, cut standard 6" holes out of them and get someone to weld them in. That and new shelf carpet/board = nothing ever happened![]()
Well yeah i did cut the metal for the 6x9's, but that was ages ago, before i even knew about it being illeagal ect..But i'm doing the same as Azzfox and sealing it back up.
Yeah splits are going in the rear- WHy?- because i'm upgrading my system, and i'll be upgrading my fronts splits aswell, so rather than sell them off and take a big loss, i'm moving them to the back, where they will become the permanent rear fill, in the factory location. No complaints from the rear passengers lol...and yes pissing the 6x9's off, (sale sect if anyones interested!) have found out for sure, VR/VS shelf will not fit, plus is doesnt come in the blue, to match the rest of my interior anyway, so im just going to pick up another VP Calais shelf and use that. Just have to get the tweeters sitting nicely in the rear retainers, and i'm good to go.....
Any one who's used the stock rear mounting location, did you use a spacer so that the speaker isnt metal on metal?? if so were the any clearance issues. I'd like to find out before i have to attempt it, as anyone who has mucked around with those pressed fibre shelves will know how much of a bitch they can be to work with....
