    Default Your stereo history...

    Hey,

Thought this might be worthwhile to show the newbies that you should buy right the first time rather than being a tight arse. If you can remember, list the car stereos that you've had over you lifetime. The spacing is where I changed gear...

    VH Commodore wagon (first car)
    Sansui head unit
    Sansui 6" speakers

    Pioneer DEH-P4150 head unit
    Kenwood 6" speakers
    Kenwood 7x10 speakers
    Sansui 2 channel amp

    Pioneer TS-C1620 bass bullet splits
    JL Audio 10W0-4 subwoofer
    Jaycar 4x50W amp
    Jaycar 2x150W amp

    Precision Power PPI2360 (90W x 2) amp

    JL Audio 15W0-4

    Adire Audio Shiva 12" sub

    Adire Audio Tempest 15" sub

Nissan Pulsar N15 sedan (bought small car for loud stereo)
Same Pioneer head unit as above
    Morel Dotech 6.5" splits
    Focal 165K woofers
    Audison LRx2.500 200W x 2 amp
    JBL 1200.1 1200W x 1 amp
    Adire Audio Brahma 15" sub

    Nakamichi CD-45z head unit

    Pioneer DEH-P9450MP head unit

    VT Berlina sedan (current car)
Same Pioneer head unit as above
    Dynaudio System240GT 6.5" splits
    Same Audison amp as above
    Directed 2400D 2400W x 1 amp
    Adire Audio Brahma 12" sub

Pioneer AVX-P7300DVD 7" screen and DVD player

    Boston Acoustic Z6 6.5" splits

Pioneer TS-W5000SPL subs x 2 (just to play with )

    Image Dynamics IDMax12 12" subs x 2

    Audison VRx1.500 (2000W x 1) amp

    Soundstream TR1600/2 (400W x 2) amp

RE Audio XXX15 15" sub (in ze mail )

And I know i've forgotten some stuff in there... But it's ridiculous the amount of gear we go through

Alrighty, this will get the old memory into gear.....

    1978 Sigma

    Head-unit: "Craig" Tape Deck
    Front Speakers: Some cheap 6.5"s.
    Rear Speakers: Cheap 6x9"s
Subs: 2 x 8" "Tornado" ($18 each) on a peice of wood in the boot haha.
Amp: "LA Power" 4 x 100w max running the 6x9s and subs.

Not too bad considering i was 14 and the car never saw tar road (paddock basher).

    1979 VB Commodore

Head-unit: Kenwood Base model CD/tuner, upgraded to a Kenwood Motorised unit, KDC-8012 i think.
Front Speakers: Kenwood 6.5" 2 ways, Changed to Pro Linear Splits then to Pioneer Bullet Splits.
Rear Speakers: Kenwood 4 way 6x9s
Speaker Amp: Weconic 4 x 75wrms powering splits and 6x9s
Sub: Started off with a MTX Thunder series 10", then upgraded to a Cerwin Vega "Vega Series" 10" in a pre-fab ported box.
Sub Amp: Weconic 2 x 75wrms bridged to power the sub.

    1982 VH Commodore

    Head-Unit: Alpine Base Model CD/tuner.
Front Speakers: Response 6.5" Kevlar Splits
    Rear Speakers: None
Spk. Amp: Response 2 x 80wrms Silver one
Subwoofers: 2 x Response "Titanium Series" 10" subwoofers, custom ported box.
    Sub Amp: Response 800wrms Monoblock
This is where the SPL bug hit me, think the best i got was 143db.

    1994 VR Commodore Station Wagon

    Head-unit: Pioneer 6750 (i think) CD/tuner
    Front Speakers: Response 6.5" Splits
    Rear Speakers: Response 6.5" Splits
Spk. Amp: Weconic 4x75wrms (bridged) powers the fronts. (Yes the same amp as the VB, over 10 years old)
Subwoofers: Started off with 2 x 12" Response Carbon Fibre DVC 12s in custom ported box, then went to 2 x SPL Dynamics DVC 15s in a different ported box.
Sub Amp: Started off with Response 800wrms Mono on the Response 12s, then upgraded to a Schneider 4000wrms Mono, blew one of the 12s so upgraded to the SPL Dynamics subs.

I think with the first setup i was doing 144db, then upgraded the amp....147s, upgraded the subs....149s did a HEAP of testing and box building (built 6 boxes and tested each), now im into the 150s.

Well there you go, completely different aim from StoneX's.....but still shows how much i spent on audio gear in the last 13 odd years haha.
    150db in a commodore =

I played with the Pioneer TS-W5000SPL's for a bit of SPL, tuned to about 41Hz, box in place of the rear seat... Was definitely loud But so were four Pioneer TS-W305C in prefab boxes, 2 in boot, 2 in cabin, just stuffing around... Not even close to the 5000SPL's but fairly loud anyway.

But yeah, I'm mainly after a loud system that sounds great...

Went the tightarse approach and put an el-cheapo Boss brand amp with a couple of sony xplod subs. pioneer 6x9s, clarion 6s and a mid-range JVC headunit.

Whole lot was probably less than $1500. Never missed a beat. Have just put it all in another car and it still goes strong 7 years later.

Ummm, does an Air Chief Diamond dot pushbutton AM only radio dating from 1960 count in this thread?

We all had to start somewhere and in 1970, cartridge players (8 tracks) were all the go, cassettes were still an overseas thing, CD, well, they were still about ten years from being devised and some people, my mate included, drove around with a portable tape recorder playing in the back seat for music.

( I should add that this was all top quality stuff in 1970, though.....and it lasted a long, long time.)

    Yeah no stingyness = cheaper

    MAZDA 626:

Sanyo headunit from cash convertors $100 (Before headunits were a dime a dozen)

    VT Commodore (In Order):

Replace HU - Sanyo from old car
    Front Speakers - Clarion 6'
    Front Speakers - Pioneer 6'
HU: Pioneer HU with Ipod Control
Rear Speakers - Clarion 6' from front
Parcel Shelf - Pioneer 6x9 run from amp
    Amp: Ebay bucket of crap
Sub - Genesis crap 12' from cash convertors $45.
    Sub - Kenwood 12
Sub box - Designed and homebuilt to taste

Cut out the cheap junk and save straight for the good stuff. The new sub alone has made my system much nicer and the amp is next to be changed over.

Definately better to buy a good setup at the start or else you start spending a lot more in the end, like me.

next up will come dynamat.. still have half a bulk pack left.

    A bit of trivia:
Installed all the gear myself (my dad helped out with the vn as I was 15 at the time).
Of all that gear above the only parts I've had from new are the eclipse head unit and the jvc head unit. All other speakers were either taken out of other cars (dad used to own a caryard) or bought second hand (eclipse amp and subs onwards).
I've also still got my old vk under a car cover in the shed.. can't bear to part with it

Yeah 2006 model and yes dual 4 ohm. But the answer is no, I only got them like 6 months ago, and I love every second of them. Shop around, I happen to know that WOW Sight and Sound are selling 12" L7s for $299, at least they were the other day. I only paid $200 each for ex-demo models.

camstatic have you tried sickaflex for the boot lid ?

this stuff work's wonder's, i used 2 tubes inthe boot of my commodore and the rattles have stopped excpet for the parcel shelf.

But just squirt it between the gaps and let it dry 24hr's before you bump that stereo again. I know lot's of SPL competiors use this stuff. it's avilible at bunnings and is like $10 a tube.
