ok, so im wanting to upgrade the stereo in my statesman pretty soon and have a few questions..
im going to start with a flip out DVD unit, thats all sweet, and ive got some speakers ready to go, with a couple of amps to power them up. they are a couple of 2 x 200w, and i want a sub or subs
What im wondering, is with the speakers powered up, what sort of power, either or both in a single or twin sub setup
for example i looked at an amp that puts out 2X380RMS, would that be enough for two subs? not enough?
im just worried ill spend all this cash and end up with something that doesnt really sound that great..
cheers
a 2x380RMS amp and a pair of 400 RMS subs would sound pretty decent man.
As i have learnt recently, its not all about the power either. My 300w DD audio sub is miles ahead of my 400w Pioneer. Shop for a good brand is all i can say
nah that is a very good point. i'll stick to good stuff, but i was worried about being underpowered, not really having done a lot with car audio, i dont really know what will and wont sound good.
Bass is always nice, but i still want to hear the rest of the music as well too lol
A 400 watt sub, running off a 380 watt amp, wont nessacraly be underpowered, but it wont be very effecient. By having extra power on tap, the amplifier will run more efficiently, and better effiency means cleaner sound. Also, although an amp states an output of 380W, by the time you factor in voltage drops, that output is going to be lower again. Also if you significantly underpower a component, it can be sent a square signal, or more known as clipping, from the amplifier to the speaker.
You want to get full potential out of your speaker, not out of your amplifier-

Just go with what your wallet can afford and what you like the sound off the most.
