    Default 150w sub with 300w amp ?

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

yes i know about rms and pmpo and max and junk, all power ratings are in RMS

    sub (responce titanium 150w) 4ohm
    amp (kenwood monoblock 1000w max) 300w x 1 at 4ohm

so im in the process of upgrading my sub, i thought was 300w but is only 150w

so my question is am i going to damage my 150w sub (yes if put up too loud)

but more important am i going to damage my new amp ???

if im only going to damage my sub by turning it up i'll just make sure i dont go over 1/2 vol and if i kill it i'll get something else,

    BUT

if im going to damage my amp what subs people recomend ? on the cheap side of things,

DD 512a. Good sub - but not cheap. ~280ish

Soundstream Picasso PCW-12 - heard good things about it for a relatively cheap unit

Ive got a 2005 pioneer 400wRMS unit here will grill, depending on if your in SA or not.

I have no idea if it will damage it or not sorry.

Im almost positive you will not damage your amplifier by powering this sub. Worst case is you turn up the volume too much and send the sub a clipped signal, which will damage the sub....not the amp.

I have used those subwoofers in a walled SPL car when i first started out in SPL competition. See attached pic.

They are a top notch woofer for the money and take a fair amount of punishment to blow. If you set the gain right on the mono you'll be right.

What type of box are you planning on using, sealed or ported?

See my post on power here: question about bridging?

To expand upon that: If you try and put 300 watts through a 150 watt sub, you're almost certain to cause it to run out of excursion. You'll hear this as a VERY loud, very unmusical noise.

If you have the time to play with it, download WinISD and model your box and driver. Pull up the excursion plot and have a look. Unless the sub driver has an unusually high x-max for its thermal power rating, you'll see quickly see that as you exceed its rated power (and, indeed, often quite a long way before it) low frequencies (say, <40hz) will cause the sub to exceed x-max.

Over excursion is USUALLY very easy to hear when the voice coil hits the back plate, so you shouldn't have any probs as long as you listen out for a tapping noise or the sub sounding like farts rather than bass

Exactly. Moral of the story is, you don't really need to worry about killing them by exceeding their thermal power rating. You're far more likely to mechanically damage them first, and unless you're listening to pure noise, or have a bad habit of turning things straight up to full blast, you'll hear the warning signs of that long before you have a problem.

It's normal practice to run speakers that are rated lower than the amp - this allows you to burn out the voice coil well before the amplifier starts clipping. The last thing you want is the output transistors to fail and send raw DC volts straight to the voice coil. As you can gather, that would leave one dead amp and speaker.
