hey guys, gonna put a sub in my boot on the weekend, 800w blaupunkt velocity, with a pioneer amp to run it, they aint great, but it'll do till i get enough spare money to go and blow $2000 on a rockford system. anyways, just wondering how much wire i'd need to wire it all up, buying it today but not sure how much to get, and wheres the easiest place to run the wires? p.s i got a vn calais

    cheers

You will need around 5m of either 8 or 4awg cable for the power depending on the amp, a short run (1m should be plenty) of the same cable for the earth, 1x5m rca, 5m of a smaller (maybe 16/18awg) wire for the remote, ring terminals for earth and battery, a fuse holder and fuse for the power wire, and some decent speaker wire from the amp to sub.
Power wire is easiest to get through the clutch cable grommet on the drivers side, and run down the drivers side scuff panel, and the remote and rcas go down the passenger side either under the scuff panel or under the carpet.
Jaycar and ebay have been where I've got cables in the past.
I think that should have you pretty well covered, but I've probably forgotten something

One quick question, are you going to amp your speakers at anytime soon and have the amp in the back for the speakers?

Yeah a wiring kit should have it all. Just make sure it isn't too small - maybe post up your amp model and we can let you know what size wiring it will need

EDIT: If you are upgrading soon, then maybe install the wiring for the bigger system now, to save replacing it later on as well. Especially if the bigger system will run multiple amps.

There should be a remote wire coming out of the back of your headunit. I would use that one. They are usually blue but something at the back of my mind tells me that sony ones are a bit weird somehow

I think the Sony's use a blue wire with a white stripe. The main difference in between connecting the wire to the head-unit and the ACC wire is when you turn the head-unit off (on the head-unit, not with the key) then the amp/s turn off. If you were to connect it to the ACC wire then the amp/s will stay on when you turn the head-unit off (once again, on the head-unit, not the key).
The most important thing is the amp/s will turn off with the key no matter which wire you connect it to.

Thats basically how i do it too. Although i run the remote and power wires down the drivers side, and RCA and speaker wires down the passenger side. You want to keep voltage carrier wires separate from audio carrying wires due to interference. Although i've never seen a problem with running them together, thats just how i've been trained.
Also i tend to use 4AWG cable most of the time, especially if you're planning on upgrading as that way u only have to wire up once.

Apart from those comments, spot on mate. Good job.

lol thanks mate. mm ****, i put my control wire with the speaker wire. took me about 6 hours to get it all together and running. anyone have suggestions on how i can get my power cable through to my engine bay from the interior?
i'll rip it all up tomorrow, swap it around so the power cable will run down the right of the car along with remote wire, and the speaker wire will be down the left. (more damn time -.-) feel like a dick having so much trouble with something so simple.. and to think, i wanna rip my whole engine apart and try rebuild it. LOL we'll see how i am in 6 months :P

EDIT: philthy you said further up easiest to run power cable through the clutch cable gromet.. its an auto, will it still be there? and if it is, where?

or if it aint there on my car, wheres the next easiest place.

thanks allot guys, your help means allot to me. wanna get this car to a stage where its got atleast $14000 of work put into it by ME not a mechanic, or some other dipshit in a shop. ME i dont wanna pay someone else to do it and go brag about my car. if i did come accross some dick like that, id be able to smile and say hahhhh, mines better. did it by myself. BITCHH :P

every contribution helps guys. thanks again

Yeah the clutch cable grommit will still be there in the firewall, next to the brake booster. Just pop it out with a screwdriver, drill / cut a small hole in it, feed the cable through and put the grommit back on.

EEEEEERH! my car wont start. the starter motor is ticking, no other noises like it wants to start at all. my sterio came on and played. i turned it off after 2 seconds though. but my doors wont lock with the remote, it sounds like it tries, and the blinkers flash (very very lightly) is my battery dead? (the ignition light on my dash isnt lighting up.)

Sounds like the battery is dead. That probably means you either listened to your stereo for ages without the car running or the amp isn't turning off when the car is.
What did you end up doing with the remote wire?

And as Holdenboy said, look to the passenger side of the brake booster (from memory) for a rubber grommet in the firewall and feed the power wire through there. It'll come through the drivers side footwell near where you would expect the top of a clutch pedal to be

remote wire connected to the blue wire with white stripe. didnt leave music on HOWEVER car hasen't been drivin in 2 weeks. i ended up putting it through the quarter panel and down to the floor of the drivers side, i couldnt find the grommet in the firewall, couldnt see shit! but i got a mate coming down in half an hour odd, with jumper leads. so ill let yas know

Edit: amp wasnt turned on, has a blue light which i didnt even know was there, so it stands out when its on. (about 5 cm wide, 2mm high of blue light in middle of my amp is hard to miss :P)
