Well I have thourght about it a bit and I think i may just upgrade my fronts speakers too but if I had an amp to run the 6x9s would it blow my 4" fronts? or if I had the power leaned more to wards the back speakers would it be bettter?
Are you reffering to the 4 inch factory dash speakers? if so, yes you could blow them. After market 4's, well it's not uncommon to find decent 4 inch coaxial, or even split system speakers, rated to 60RMS, or even higher, depending on how much your willing to spend. By leaning, (or fading as it's known) to the rear, all that's going to do, is draw your sound stage back.
Seriously dude, of you haven't already purchased the 6x9's, don't do it!!! In order for your stereo to sound good, the sound stage MUST come predominately from the front. You wouldnt go to a concert and stand there with your back turned to it would you?
Trust me mate, i've been down the path, i've even had a set of 4's, 6's, 6x9's, and a sub, all at once. And it wasn't cheap gear either, but i ripped it out, put good splits in the front, and a properly amped sub, in a speciffically built enclosure, and i tell you now you can't even compare the two !!!
^^^What he said. I'm sick of writing it out every time
Oh, and it isn't too hard to put VR/S door pods on your VN and you can run 6/6.5" speakers in the front
Someone recently, maybe even HCVP put some good looking fibreglass? pods on the door trims instead of the holden ones so thats an option as well

I only got the 6x9s because i can't afford a good system at the moment. I am thinking of putting some pioneer 4" in the fronts but I will eventually uprade to 6" splits with vr door pods but all in good time I just neeed something decent because atm those 4" factories are actually all i have -.-

These ones?http://forums.justcommodores.com.au/...-photo0224.jpg
The Factory VR VS pods look awful in a Blue VP interior, no way was i going to have them. I just gotta get some rear map pockets now from a VQ, then modify the remaining door trim to suit them, for a near factory look
Pods in question, were just the 6 inch aerpro versions, carefully sounded out to accomodate a 6.5 inch speaker, and an MDF spacer attached to the base, to eliminate any clearance issues, then re-trimmed to suit..

But yeah mate, if all you have to work with is the 6x9's, and an amp, then by all means put them in. I guess i'd rather have amped rear speakers on there own, than the factory dash ones. A few to keep in mind though, there's no drop in location for a set of 6x9's on the rear shelf(unless you can get them to fit above the factory rear cutouts, some will, some won't). Otherwise, you will need a spacer to start with, and then you will need to cut the pressed fibre shelf ( carefull, their very fragile, i went through 3 getting it right)

Well I was thinking if they dont fit to make like plat forms and mount them else where and tilt them to face the car so sound doesnt hit window.
those spacers in the pictures i used are only about 20 bucks, and just screw down with 4 screws. You can get angled one's aswell, but again it depends on the depth of the speaker basket.
Just something to bear in mind with an "exposed" system in an older car, is that it will be a thief magnet. Careful where you park if you have the shiny bits in plain view like that.
