We'll need more info than that...like what amp and what sub (model numbers would be good) and how have you got it connected to the system.

I'm not sure how fiddling with amp settings would have got rid of the whine.
Was it at least making some bass before you fiddled with the settings?

--before i fiddled with the settings, it only gave me a whine (it has two switches, an rca / something else switch, and another one which says nothing, yet to look in the book for what it was) but i moved one of them, and the whine stopped. turned the bass boost in the middle, gain in the middle, and the hz thing in the middle.

it is a Pioneer 800w amp, i'll get numbers in a min, the sub is a cheap ass audobahn one. only $100, but still, the shit should work. i'll get all numbers in a min.

as i've already stated: all wired up as manual said, remote wire to back of head unit (sony xplod), power wire from battery through to amp, ground screwed to my body, speaker wires from headunit to amp, annnnddd speaker wires from amp to sub, and another speaker wire on the sub. give pics and stuff soon.

The 1st switch will probably be to pick between RCA and hi-level inputs, you will want that on RCA, since that's where your input signal is coming from. If that causes the whine, then I would be checking to see that all the RCAs are connected well, and aren't run alongside the power wires.

The second switch will be the filter, which you will want on LPF, or low pass filter to only let the bass through to the subwoofer.

As far as the rest of the settings, once we have the thing working we can work on them

Also, I'd be making sure you sanded back the earth point so it has the best connection possible

EDIT: Wait....speaker wire from headunit to amp? Why aren't you using RCAs?

okay amp is a Pioneer gm-d7400m, sub is an audiobahn aw1251t, im pretty sure when i put the audio plugs into my head unit, it was a speaker output, my amp instruction book says its okay to use speaker output, just change the switch from rca to sp or something, the other switch as a bfc (beat frequency control)

If you plugged RCA leads into the back of the headunit, you will want that switch set to RCA. If you used speaker wire from your headunit to the amp then you would want it set to the other one, but I'm not even sure how they would be connected to that amp unless you made up a lead with RCA plugs on one end?
If this switch is in the wrong position, you won't get any sound through the sub, so you will know which one is wrong.

Not sure what the BFC thing you are talking about is, as I couldn't see it on the websites I looked at:
Ryda Car Audio - Pioneer Car Audio GM-D7400M Car Amplifier($299.00)
    GM-D7400M - Features - Pioneer Amplifier - Car#Entertainment

If you are still getting whining, it's time to look at wiring.
If not, it's time to get the amp tuned right, and not just random settings

top link, zoom in on the side pictures, the picture where the output connections (For sub wiring) theres a little switch on the right hand side. i dont think it does much, it said something about the radio, like if theres a strange noise coming from woofer flick that switch or some shit, as for the rca thing, theres two speaker out plugs in the back of the head unit, its just a standard sony xplod.. so nothin special, i have the wires running from there, down the left side of my car into the input in my amp. whats the difference between rca wire and speaker wire? should i be using speaker wire as im putting it into a "Speaker out" plug? down the left side of my car, into the input in my amp.
edit: pic of sub in a sec.

I see it now. This is what I found about it:
BFC Switch: Beat Frequency Control switch--if you hear a beat while listening to an AM radio broadcast, change the position of the switch with a small flat screwdriver. (This unmarked switch is located beside the power terminals)
So I'd just ignore it for now...

RCA refers to the plugs on the end of the cable like this:

So if you have these plugged in at either end, you can leave the switch on RCA.

If you were to be using the speaker input one, you would get the wires on the back of the headunit that go to your original speakers and connect them to the amp, but I've never soon ones that plug into the amp like rcas before
The difference is basically that the rca will send a little signal, whereas the speaker one sends a big one that will distort and probably damage the amp if you aren't telling the amp to expect a massive signal.

In the headunit, is there an option to control the subwoofer. I know on mine I can turn it on and off from the headunit. Make sure it is turned on there if its an option
The amp still turns on doesn't it? I can't see on the pics if it has a light on it anywhere or not

my amp turns on when my head unit turns on and off when my head unit turns off cause of the remote control wire, it has them plugs, but on an 8 guage wire, yet on the other end (which is in my head unit) its an L shape.

do you have the negative on the other side of the sub going to the negative speaker terminal on the amp?

So...amp is getting power fine. But you need to make sure the headunit is sending signal to the amp, and that the amp is sending it to the sub.
If you have any old speakers lying around you can hook them up to the amp and make sure it isn't the sub causing the problem.
But as I said, make sure to look through your headunits settings and see if there is a sub control bit in there. Flip through the manual as well if you have it. Failing that, post up the model (i know its a pain) and I'll see whats on the net

I didn't mean to pull it out, unless you wanted to make sure everything was plugged in alright.
I meant to go through the options in the units menu. If it has an "audio" button or similar, scroll through looking for possibly subwoofer related things. I can't really be more specific as I've barely ever dealt with sony headunits

oh lol yeah understood that, but forgot to reply about it, i will check it too. however dont see why it'd be down, car was owned by someone who put the sony xplod in, and had a sub, and put a 2.5" exhaust tip, aaaannnd last of all, drifted into a gutter and moved the diff over >.> so i cant imagine the sound for sub being down

neh, left the fkr out, it screwed my car, again, first coil pack, and only just fixed today was the battery earth wire, my earth wire was litterally | | like that thick, so i got one like 1.5-2cm thick could this have been why my sub wasnt working (cause of the shitty earth for the battery.)?
