Ok, this seems like a reasonable place to lodge this question.
I'm doing some renovations on the sound system in my VY ute.
It has the factory blaupunkt H/U and factory door speakers.
before I pull the panels off the doors, does anybody know what the output of the speakers are (6" I assume, but what is the RMS rating)?
I'm looking at Jaycar components.
Looking at one of these:
10" Response Subwoofer
CS2352
10" Response Subwoofer - Jaycar Electronics
May get 2 of these, but probably not necessary especially in a ute.
May also replace the factory door speakers with:
Component Car Speakers with Ribbon Tweeters
CS2338
Component Car Speakers with Ribbon Tweeters - Jaycar Electronics
Although not sure if these are any/much better than the factory speakers already there?
They have an extra set of tweeters incl crossovers.
Now, at this stage I'd like to get just the one power amp to drive door speakers and the 10" sub/s (probably just one at this stage).
The amps I've been considering are:
Response Car Amp 4x100WRMS
AA0426
Response Car Amp 4x100WRMS - Jaycar Electronics
or...
Response Car Amp 4x50WRMS
AA0422
Response Car Amp 4x50WRMS - Jaycar Electronics
Question: Can I drive the 2 door speakers and the sub/s from these amps?
Channel 1&2 for the door speakers.
Channel 3&4 bridged for the sub/s.
If this will work, which amp of these 2 would suit the configuration best?
If there is another Jaycar amp that would be better suited, what is it?
The 4x100 amp I listed above has 3 x 30 amp fuses.
Would the fuse size I need for the main power from the battery be 30 amp?
I.E. should I use a 30 amp fuse for this amp near the car battery?
Question: Box for sub: No where in the specs for these subwoofers does it give a recommended volume or box size.
Does anybody know what volume (or box size) would suite these best?
I'm thinking probably a sealed box would be the best bet, any ideas or thoughts on this?
Also does the inside of the box's need to be lined with anything?
I was considering putting this/these box/s behind one/both of the seats in the ute.
Thanks guys.
Helpful responses eagerly anticipated and very much appreciated.
Alrighty, here goes....
The stock speakers are not that powerful, maybe 30wrms
The Jaycar 4 x 100wrms would be my choice, you'll have plenty of "headroom" when running the splits and the subwoofer, although you will have to run the subwoofer off channels 3 & 4 not bridged. The subwoofer has dual voice coils and the amp would not like being bridged at 2 ohm (not stable). Its not a huge concern but just something to consider when installing the gear / making the box (you'll need 4x speaker terminals on the box instead of the usual 2).
As the amp has 3 x 30A fuses means it will draw 90A in total. You will need a 4awg wiring kit to maximise the power output of the amp. I would use a 80A main fuse near the battery, the amp will only draw 90A if its faulty so you should blow the front fuse before the amps' fuses blow. Plus i dont think you can get 90A fuses, only 80A and 100A AFAIK.
That subwoofer prefers a low tuned ported enclosure, with a volume of around 1.5-2.0 cubic foot. You may not be able to fit that in your ute too easily so i would say a sealed enclosure around 1 cubic foot would be ideal. You could line the box with dampening material but personally i dont when building enclosures, it may be my hearing but i just cant hear a difference.
Hope this helps.

Yes, it helps allot!
So the subwoofer will be getting left and right signal (stereo)?
I just found this thread... 12" sub (Jaycar) install into VZ 'S' Ute
I think it should work for my VY ute. Phreddy was saying that just over 35L would be the go for vprsvmille's 12" subwoofer.
I think I'll go for the 12" as there looks to be enough room beside the fuel tank.
Does that sound about right? That's about 1.24 cubic foot.
Thanks.
Yeah 1.24 cubic foot sounds fine for a sealed box.
It dosent matter whether the sub gets a stereo or mono signal, its only one speaker so you wont hear any difference in between bridging it and running it in stereo mode.

Holdenboy:
I've gone with all your suggestions.
I have a crossover for the Component Car Speakers with Ribbon Tweeters
CS2338.
It looks like this...
I'm assuming the TW connections are for the tweeter.
Which ones am I best to use?
Also before I make the sub woofer box. Maybe I'd be best to make a ported enclosure?
If so... how long and what is the diameter of the port pipe that would best suite the box?
Also does it mater where it is placed?
What are you're thoughts?
Thanks again for your help
if your stuck for space put the sub box next to the fuel tank and port into the cab ive done this a few times and it sounds good but u can only run 1 ten if u do it that way
Yes, I was going to stick it next to the tank. I mentioned above this link... 12" sub (Jaycar) install into VZ 'S' Ute
I've already got the 12" and according to the link, should be fine. Do you see a problem with the 12"?
Also the sub woofer specs say Vas: 72.5 litres
Is this the volume inside the box not including the rear of the speaker?

ive tried with 12s before but they are to big if u wanna run a port into the cab there is a vent behind the seat u take out and put it through there
Could you explain why vprsvmille didn't run into that problem?
I wasn't planning on porting into the cab. Not sure if there is much point in that.
There are a series of holes that lead into the cab that are covered with rubber.
Bass will have not trouble making it's way through that and indeed through the bodywork.
I'm not worried about what sort of enclosure I use as long as it works and sounds good.
Does anyone know which connections I should useI'm assuming the TW connections are for the tweeter.
Which ones am I best to use?
if your not porting it u can fit a 12 but u get a better sound if u port it into the cab and u dont need as much power to run it
the stock speakers are 15rms
the new ones *should* be awesome... i'd love to know how they sound cos i'm looking to buy some
i was quoted up
1 eclipse cd5030 cd tuner
1 rockford fosgate p3ls10 10" sub and slimlne box
1pr maestro cs6508 splits
1 alpine mrpf300 4 channel amp
installed for 1800
thats what the dude reconed would be the best setup for me at alberts
doing some research last night i came across the alpine deck ida-x200 which i like had everthing i wanted
i like the rockford fosgate sub
i would like some input with the slits please and amp
Have you read the posts above?i would like some input with the slits please and amp
I'm fairly sure what I've listed and have purchased will make for a kick ass car hi-fi.

Hey mate looks like a top job you've done there. How does it sound?
Just got the media player plugged into it at the moment playing mp3's. Still... for a car hi-fi... sounds pretty good. Tried out with a stack of reference tracks. Is heaps of adjustments you can do... I've got the crossover that's mounted to the doors with the tweeters set to 0db. Was -3db. 0db allows you to hear the cymbals etc with real clarity.
The amp has crossovers and sensitivity adjustments for both channel sets. So yes, after a few hours of tweaking, I can recommend these Jaycar components. Just got to install Phreddy's PCB's and we'll have a top setup I think.![]()
