Hey guys, im doin my own install in my ride, and im puttin in a raised false floor, i wanna put the amps under there and put perspex windows in it to show off the amps, the floor will be carpeted and im unsure how to put the perspex in.
hey mate
are you more or less building a box as the false floor? If so, cut away some of the mdf between two rails of the box and put the perspex in there?
cut out the hole in the mdf, carpet it up so the edges around the hole dont show etc, turn it over so the bottom is face up. put your perspex over it (i assume it's already measured to fit - if not measure it up and cut it larger than the hole.
place your perspex over the hole and then pre drill your holes a couple sizes smaller and countersink your holes. get screws large enough into the mdf and through the perspex but not go through the mdf.... clearly
screw it in and then you should be good. if you want the perspex flush with the carpet... then dont do what i just said. im not sure just yet how that gets done.
also when carpeting follow this from about the Kwik Grip down...HOW TO replace headlining - Very detailed
or there is a slightly better version about 2 pages in saying to stage it. as in do 30 or so cm at a time so you dont have bubbles or whatnot.
The easiest and cleanest way i would do is as follows:
Make the "Floor Piece", ie, the large top section to your box.
Cut the viewing window you want out of your "Floor piece" section.
Get a piece if perspex that is at minimum 4 inches bigger the whole way around your cut out in the floor piece
** There is a few ways you can go here.
1. If your cutout is quite small in comparison to the floor piece, you will want to fill around the perspex (as its expensive and you'll see why)
--> Find some mdf that is the exact same thickness as your perspex
--> using your floor piece and perspex, make a replica of your foor piece out of the mdf (using thinner perspex here is a good idea) The floor piece cutout is one size and the filler piece cutout is another size to take into account the 4inches of buffer
--> Glue your perspex to the floor piece, then glue your "filler cutout" to the floor piece.
You will now have 2 layers of equal height which your can cover in carpet to hide the perspex overhang.
Another way is to follow the above instructions but instead of making a "filler piece" cut some "at length" strips of about 1-2 inches and border your floor.
Then, using a thin piece of mdf cut out your desired window size again and then cover the whole lot (like a sandwhich) so you have these layers:
1 (bottom) floor piece
2. Border edge and perspex window
3. Top cover piece with cutout for window
Then just carpet it!
