Hi guys, I have a Kenwood KAC-8104D 1000w mono block amp and i have it running 2 kenwood 1200watt 400rms subs and i have some questions about it.
1. The amp says that it does 500watt RMS x1 at 2 Ohms. So if i wired it up so both the positive wires went to the positive terminal on 1 sub and both the negative wires went to the negative terminal on the same sub would it be pushing 1000watts at 2 Ohms into the sub? Can i wire it like that?
2. Also with the amp and subs if my subs are rated at 400rms and i have it wired up so the amps doing 500rms at 2ohms is the sub getting 500watts into it or is it only taking 400watts from the amp?
Let me know if you don't understand what i'm on about lol.
Cheers!

You'll have to give a model number for the sub in question....if it has 4 ohm dual voice coils you will need to connect each + and each - together then run these to the amp, eaither that or run two +s and two -s from the amp and connect them to each set of terminals.
The amp will seldom produce 500wrms, things like impedance rise and voltage drop prevent the map from making its max power, thats why i always recommend people buy an amplifier with a little more power than the speaker is rated for.

The subs are the KFC-W3011's. It says the nominal impendence is 4Ohms but i have them wired up for 2Ohms and they sound pretty good. Would they sound better if they were wired up for 4Ohms? Cause it says that the amp pushes 500watts rms x1 at 2Ohms but only 300watts rms x1 at 4Ohms?

Those subs are SVC 4 ohm, so you would need 2 of them to get a 2 ohm load for the amp, like youve been doing with the two subs.
You can just "choose" what impedance you want to wire them to, you are restricted to the number and impedance of the voice coils. With the one sub, youre limited to 4 ohm impedance only.
In your situation, you can wire those subs to 2 ohm and 8 ohm.
In general, the subs will sound better when wired to 2 ohms as this is your amps' optimum impedance (i.e. the impedance in which the amp makes its most power safely).

Ok sweet as. So if i run both positive wires and both negative wires to the one sub would it be putting in 1000watts rms? Or does it not work like that?

hey mate,
happy to be corrected here but i think that the amp's power rating of 500wrms still stays the same.
Alrighty then. I just thought that maybe cause it puts 500rms into each sub if i had both positive and both negative wires connected to just one sub it would put in a 1000rms. Do you see where im coming from?

You may be getting a little confused. That amp produces 500wrms and 1000w peak at 2 ohm impedance. When you had both of your Kenwood subs (4 ohm each = 2 ohm) you were giving both subs 500wrms, so that means each sub was getting 250wrms.
If you were to just wire one sub up to the amp, it would produce 300wrms into that one sub.
"Monoblock" amplifiers have two sets of speaker terminals to make wiring 2 subs to it easier, its not like a normal amplifier where each set of output terminals has its own channel.

Oh ok thanks mate. I see how it works now lol. I thought that they were getting 500watts each. If there only getting 250 watts and there rated at 400 does that mean if i can get an amp the produces 800watts rms they'll get 400watts each? Therefor sound better?

yes, provided that the 800wrms is at 2ohm and not 4ohm or 1ohm impedance. With that being said...you won't here a great deal of difference....some dependant upon the quality of the amplifier but a huge deal.
You put you left foot in, your put your right foot in , you take your left foot out and you slide it all about!
