Hey guy's, i'm currently running a Soundstream 15 inch. But i listen to a wide variety of music, and a 15 inch, just dosen't suit my listening, and dosen't keep up with some of the faster beats.
So, i'd like to replace it with a good quality 12, or even a 10.
I have a budget of around$300 for the sub, maybe a little more, and money aside for an enclosure.
I have the day off tommorow, so i'm going to have a look in some stores, but as most of you would know, stores (particulary one's in your area) don't stock everything, so i may end up purchasing something online, or perhaps getting a store to order something in.
So, does anyone have any reccomendations for a sub within my budget.
I'm considering an Alpine Type R, but i've read a couple of times that they are a bit overated?
hey mate i'm most likely a bit bias in this situation because i listen to alot of metal, however i highly recomend 10inch subs. compared to a 12" they are alot quick and more responsive, they produce an entirely different sound in my opinion. i also listen to some hip hop and they still can hit those low notes, and hold them however from my experience two 10"'s would be better if you listen to alot of hip hop.. but then again, i'm prob. bias haha.
but all i'm trying to say is, look into the 10's you might be surpised
Yeah mate, i actually had 2 Blaupunkt Velocity 10's, a couple of years ago, in the back of a VW Polo. So i agree with you there. 2 10's however, are out of my budget, as i'd have to purchase an extra amp..
ah okay mate, no problem. good luck with the hunt.
Had a bit of a look online, and have come up with these few options.
Welcoming any comments on them
MB Quart discus 12''
SPL Dynamic XTR250 12''
Boston G212 12''
Alpine Type R 12''
What sort of music do you listen to?
For about 300ish...
If you're after something a bit more sq, have a look at boston G2, peerless xxls or image dynamics IDQ for a start.
Or spl wise maybe dd 510?
I can vouch for boston and dd subs, both very good at what they do. One great thing about my boston is the way it keeps up with really fast drum beats.. doesn't disolve into a muddy mess. The dd I tried out was rediculous, it was stupidly loud but even then it wanted more power than the 500w I gave it.
I can't comment on type Rs, but have also heard mixed reviews.
Hey Bezz, i don't really listen to a particular type of music all the time. It will range from Hip Hop/Rap, to RnB, and anything from techno to metal. Although lately i've really been getting back into my techno and drum and bass, which is my main reason for really wanting to upgrade my sub.
Ah ok cool, well i listen to a lot of dnb and rock/metal with my boston and really can't fault it.. so that's my recommendationThe problem for me now is I want to get a new amp...
i had a pair of 12'' kicker competition subs and they were better than all the other subs i tried including rockford fosgate the bass was awesome with just a small 2 ch coustic amp
Is there a site i can view peerless subs on, i'm searching and it's coming up with washers and dryers lol
I'm liking the look of the G2 at the moment. From what i'm reading, it's quite a good SQ sub..i'm considering an SPL Dynamics XTR250 also..
Would i notice a huge difference between a 10, and a 12, being in such a large car?
I haven't run a 10 in ages so I'm not too sure. I think when you start getting into these better quality subs the size isn't as much as an issue, the 12 should be just as responsive as a 10. I guess a 12 should sound slightly louder than a 10 based on cone size, but then you have to take into account sensitivity and all that other crap.
I haven't heard an SPL dynamics sub before but it seems holdenboy has proved they go damn loud haha
btw, didnt you buy that soundstream sub not too long ago?
Yeah i haven't had the Sound Stream all that long now. Aside from the fact that the box i made for it, takes up my entire boot, i can't always listen to the music i want, and i'm chasing a more SQ setup.
ive got a 12" mtx thunder 6000 in my vz and that keeps up with most of the music i listen too ( hip hop, drum and bass...all sorts) and thats an old school one...the newer models that i have heard are alot more punchy then mine...and the lower models ie 4500 or 5500 will fit in your budget...and they sound great...
hey mate
i have a pair of the kicker competition subs (black ones)
and they get pretty much everything man
they get ur real low dnb beats also ur really fast double kicker drums in metal and punk/emo
they are a really good sub
if u live in perth u can have a listen if u havent already
they dont take up that much room in my boot(about half)
but yeh i know u dont want double but ur not going to get much better value then those
the JL audio W3 is really good
go into jb hifi (i work there) and try get a good price
i would do about 350 ish for a sub like that
(pretty cheap)
I dont rate kicker at all for sq applications. They'd be about the same level as the soundstream sub (maybe a bit lower?).
High end JL isn't bad however, but you do pay for the name a bit.
I can highly rate the Peerless subs, I run the XXLS alum cone myself
dont require a lot of power and sound very nice. fantastic subs for the price
Well i went out today and i ended up purchasing a 12'' Type R Alpine. I know i probably could have picked up a better sub for the money ($350) but i don't get a lot of time outside of work, and i wanted a quick replacement sub, of reasonable quality, which is pretty well what i got. I have it running in a 26Lt sealed enclosure, which fit's perfectly in the space at the back drivers side of the boot, and practically gives me my entire bootspace back. Sound wise, overall it's a big improvement from the 15, and with a bit of sound deadning here and there, it should round off the system nicely. And who know's, after working for a few more months, i may even add a second one![]()
hey man any chance of a pic of the sub box in the corner? i'm trying to get keep my boot space too.
Cheers
Yeah mate, i only took one picture when i put it in, but as you can see, there's still a fair bit of space. It's kind of hard to see in the picture because of the shadow's, but the box actually goes all the way into the groove, and sits flush up against the sidewall.(I don't think i had it pushed back all the way in this picture because i took it while i was vacuming out the boot)I'll take a few better pictures tommorow if you like. I'm thinking if i was to add another sub, where i could put, if i put it in the same spot on the other side, i'd probably have to remove the spare.
looks good mate well done.
i hear the type-r's go well ported... (here we go again!)
