Yes mate you certainly can keep the stock head-unit.

You will need one of two things:
    1) An amp with "high level" inputs, these are basically speaker wire inputs.
    2) A line out converter (LOC), which converts speaker wires (high level) into RCAs (low level).

To run a subwoofer, you'll need to "tap" into the rear speaker wires, before they go into the rear doors. You can do this by taking off the sill cover panels and looking for the speaker wires inside the loom. Once youve located the wires, strip back the insulation (its easier if you dont cut the wire) and solder/tape new speaker wires onto each wire. Then just run your new wires to the boot area and connect them to either the high level inputs on the amp or to the LOC, then run a set of RCA cables to the amp.
You can also access these speaker wires from the rear of the head-unit, which may be easier to find the wires but then you'll have to run them all the way to the boot.....so its got its positives and negatives.

This way the amplifier receives an input from the rear channels, so fading the head-unit to the rear will fade the sound to the rear speakers and subwoofer.

You'll need to run a power cable from your battery to the boot (or mounting location for the amp), its best to buy one of those amp wiring kits, but in your situation i'd buy one with just the power / earth and fuseholder in it, as you wont be needing the 5m RCA cable or a heap of speaker cable.

    Need anymore help, just ask

Does this apply for a VU also, assuming they run the same Eurovox cd player?

i want to hook a sub up in the ute, ive done a few installs on aftermarket cd players but im unsure as to wether the stock EUROVOX has rca outputs for the amp? is doing it your way getting rid of the use of RCA's or utilising the standard speaker wire with the use of a LOC into a RCA? im arse about face on this one!
