I want to replace all my stock speakers in my VY. What will I be looking at? Putting 6x9 or 6x6's in, running them off an amp? Tweeters? Car door speakers? I just want the stock sound better before I go in for a headunit and subs. Cheers
YOu have 6" splits in up front & 6" in rear doors.
I'd replace your fronts with a 6.5" split. Say a Focal V1 or the like. Very nice sounding speaker IMO.
Up to you what you do with the rears. I don't usually run any. If you go 6x9's on the rear shelf, you will need a grill kit to let the sound through and run new wires fromeither the Deck or the B pillar back.
ANy more questions, just ask.
Kelvin
Thanks for the reply.
Does the vy have rear shelf speakers? So I should by 3 sets of 6x9's. What about an amp?
Do you plan on running a subwoofer?
How much do you plan on spending on the hardware alone?

You have 6" speakers in the rear doors, and i believe provisions for 6x9s in the parcel shelf. I suggest you upgrade the front speakers to 6/6.5" splits (component) speakers first. Power them from the stock head-unit to start off with, if thats not loud enough for you either look into getting 6x9s for the parcel shelf or buying an amplifier to power the front splits.
This way you can progressively upgrade the system, without going "all out" if its not needed to get the sound you want, it saves you money too![]()

Yeah well I bought a kenwood 12 in a box and 300w amp off a mate, but id rather spend what cash I have now on getting the basics otherwise I got a sh*t doof doof commodore which isn't want I want. I have 5-700 for the basics and if I need an amp I can chuck in extra on that.
Go with a good set of splits running off the headunit for a starter, and if you feel the need you could throw in a set of $100 rears as well. Then you can add the amp later if you feel you need more.

I had a quick squizz in autobahn and jb hifi today at speakers. I saw some component 6.5" splits and there about I think nearly 500? Is that right. Will a 6.5" fit or should I got just 6"'s. Also I have no parcel shelf speakers, how do I go about putting them in. I sorta wanted to spend 500 on just speakers with no installation.. But it looks like ill be upwards of 1000.. Good shelf speakers were about 250, and then splits [componant if that's them?] were expensive and I wanted to replace all 4 door speakers
Cheers
It completely depends on what you want to spend. I sell splits for anywhere from $150 to $3200. And soon I will have some in excess of $15 000 on offer.

A half decent set of splits (components) will set you back around $250-$350, $500 is abit overpriced but it depends on what brand / model they were.
For $250-#350 you'd be looking at Alpine Type Rs, The Audio Development Splits as posted by Joe, maybe lower range Focals, MB Quarts etc.
In all honesty i wouldnt bother about adding a set of parcel shelf speakers, the only reason i would is if i wanted extra bass output and didnt want to add a subwoofer / box.
For rear door speakers if you want to upgrade them just go with a set of half-decent coaxial speakers, maybe $100-$150 worth, even that is kinda extreme as you wont be sitting in the back seat and want the majority of the sound coming from in front of you (like it would at a concert etc).

That's exactly what I needed someone to tell me holdenboy thanks, so just a set of good 6's for the front and half decent ones for the back? Ill start looking around now for them. So ill be lookin at 500 without installation?
Yeah thats approximate....i wouldnt expect to pay more than $500, especially if you buy them from the same place.
Are you planning on adding an amplifier and/or subwoofer?

ya those speakers for 500 bucks were probably the JL audio C5 on special
i work at jb and those are the most expensive we stock on our board
they are a really good speaker and very good quality but the alpine type R's are really good quality too and ur also saving urself a bit of coin
if u were going to run an amp at a later stage i would definately recommend changing your head unit as it will give u much better quality sound when running an amp. you want something with 3 rca preouts if ur running a 4 channel and a mono block or just 2 pre outs will do if running ur front speakers and a sub (thats the cheapest and probably makes hardley any difference to the sound)
Adding new front component speakers and a sub will make a HUGE difference to the sound djs7cc, even just upgrading the speakers to coaxials will make a difference.
I do agree however about upgrading to an aftermarket head-unit, not only will you get an increase in sound quality, you'll also get (depending on what you buy) MP3 / Ipod / USB compatibility and proper sound tuning features (like high pass filters for the speakers and an EQ).

If you put 6x9's in the parcel shelf you'll have to "pop" out the tac-welded covers, you'll see them if you stick your head in the boot and look up. Also there's no wiring (executives at least) so might have to tap into them at the door pillar.
'Ah well, I suppose it had to come to this.'
Yeah I got myself a 12" sub with just a 300 watt amp in a box koz it was a deal. Im not thinking about installing it yet koz I want my speakers done. I was thinking.. Splits front, coaxial rear.. And if that's not enough.. Run them 4 off an amp and or add 6x9 off the parcel shelf. I have no idea about audio. Ddoes that sound alright? I want eventually 2 12" subs.. Or is this askin too much?
Thanks guys, you been a great help
That sounds fair enough. Amplifying the splits in the front is a must. To get the full potential out of a set of splits you need to make sure they're amplified.

Yeah ill amp the splits in the front with the amp that came with the sub, and buy another amp for the sub. So im thinking splits front, coaxial rear. Option of 6x9 later on. I wana put it into the stock headunit whilst I save up about $1500 for the headunit. Will this go off the stock head?
I couldn't send a pm off because I access this site through mobile. But I bought a clarion 12" in a box, and a clarion apx2120 120w amp. Should I buy a new amp for the sub and run the interior speakers off this. I've decided coaxial [possiably rear] and splits [front unless anyone can tell me what's the best way to have them]. so run the 4 speakers off the 120.. Or yeah.. What would your set up be with the options I have? My budget is prob maxed $1000 without head unit. Cheers
Okay that post is a little confusing. Could you just confirm which parts you require to fit in your $1000 budget?

Alright haha I was in a rush typing that. I will spend upto a grand on splits and coaxial, amp for the sub, keep the 120w amp from my sub now. And possiably another 12 and|or 6x9's
Which clarion sub is it? And are you looking for just grunt or good sound quality?

Couldn't tell you joe, it was $330 with box 150w amp and sub. So its not spasticly mad.. More boom than quality, but yeah I wanna hear the music well...
This is what I would offer from Shopping Secure to solve that little problem of yours:
Shopping Secure - Audio Development AD6CX
Shopping Secure - Audio Development AD6
Shopping Secure - Option Audio OAX801
The speakers are high quality and handmade in Italy and the amplifier is a good budget choice with plenty of grunt for a future upgrade to something a little less boomy.
That will fit easily into the budget you are asking for and you will definitely be able to hear the music.
Your using the amplifier from the sub to run the front speakers, correct?
