7 band parametric and time alignment on my h/u is enough to me. I reckon I'd spend way too long fiddling if I bought a dedicated EQ!
an eq is only as good as the user, you really need to know what you're doing to get any worth out of one

I think I would just be constantly fiddling if I had an external EQ.
I had a day or 2 of fiddling with crossover settings when I installed my splits, and now every now and then just have to adjust the sub level or the "HI" eq on the headunit from 0 to +1.
Every 6 months or so I have had a bit of a play with hpf/lpf setting but not much really changes anymore, and I haven't missed having a massive 24 band EQ in there for the slight SQ gain I might get out of it

We could all get the new Alpine units that have the sweet tuning function. Something about buying a specially designed mic that measures the sound and sets your eq for you, apparently near limitless eq settings. Imprint technology or something.

Its just adding more distortion to the signal imho. A good head unit should do everything you need.

I've thought about it, as I'm running a Phreddy line-out mod in my VZ and the stock head unit has what you might call a "limited" EQ
Anyone got experience with processors like JL CleanSweep?

I don't know how to use an equaliser but I'm sure someone in Perth would.
The question I have ... when do I know I need one? I did have a look at them previously but what kind of equipment would make these necessary? or are these another thing that isn't necessary and is just a market money making thing?

Depends how good you want your music to sound in ur mind! i stress that, if your current set up sounds brilliant to you, dont change it, if it sounds crappy there are things taht you can do to fix this. its all up to personal preference, and if your an audiophile then you'd most likely get an eq. i have an alpine 9887 headunit which has time alignment and active crossovers and my system sounds fine to ME without having to get an eq![]()
Sorry to change the thread a little.
Just been searching Sonic Electronix... they've got Bass Expanders & Reconstruction Processors.
I've just had a look at the most expensive one - AudioControl EPIC-160. Do these actually do anything? What I found cool about this unit is the SPL meter up to 160db built-in mic at the front. But apart from that would it actually do anything?

I see.. Well I just got the SoundStream TRC6N components but have swapped the tweeter with the SoundStream SST-05 tweeters, which run of the TRC6N crossover. But... playing metal type music is sounds crap at higher volume and sometimes when playing songs like Taylor Swift at a higher volume it hurts the ears ... not cause of the volume but the sound. But this could just be an issue with the crossover not being set up correctly.
