    Smile Installing sound system.

Hey, I'm kind of new to this forum, and i was wondering if some one could please give me some helpful advice on installing my new sound system that I'm going to pick up tomorrow for my VT (never installed a sound system in a car), I have just bought 4 new 6" speakers, a couple of splits, and a head unit. Also if someone could please give me some step by step instructions on how to remove the inner door so i can get to the speakers and how to remove/install the current/new splits.

    Cheers.

    mate, where to start :S

Door skins! Around the bottom of each skin, running from about halfway down are phillips head screws, undo thse, should be maybe 6 or so.

Then, in the door opener, there's a little plastic cover, you need to pop that one out, use a tiny tiny screw driver or an awl if you've got one. Behind that is a phillips head screw. Undo that and then give a firm tug on the handle at it'll drop off. Inside the hole that's left is another screw into a white bracket, undo that!

Then, the door lock button. Use your awl or tiny screw driver again, you need to pop out the little red oval bit, it's very tricky. Once you've got that, the button will slide up and out. Behind it is another phillips head screw. Undo that. Next, if you haven't already wind down your window.

If you haven't got power windows, behind the winder you need to gentle push a flat blade screw driver in, then get another screw driver and push a little horseshoe shaped clip off from around the base of the plastic. It'll flick out, so pay attention if it disappears on you!

With any luck you've found them all, now you need to gently slide the door skin up. Be firm but gentle, Holden got it on there in one piece, try to keep it that way :P

Then the speakers are just held in with a set of three phillips head screws, and then a special little clippy dealy on the back of the speaker for cabling, Again be firm with the speaker pod because there's a double sided tape of sorts holding it in place.

    That's your door skins!
    Now the head unit:
You need special tools! Don't buy them, it's a waste of money. Go to the wardrobe and find yourself a nice wire coat hanger. Don't tell the misses you're taking it, this is an unnecessary step and often ends in an argument.

You need to straighten out the coat hanger. You're making two of these! In the face of the head unit is a set of 4 holes, 2 either side, and they're at the same spacing, if that makes sense.
What you need to do is cut and end of the coat hanger so it's nice n straight, then take about 5 or 6 cm's and make a nice tight bend in the hanger. Use a pair of pliers, it's easier and you won't make a mess of your hands. Plus you get a nice sharp bend.
Now you have a hanger with a bend! Congratulations. Have a look at one set of holes on the face, the next bend in the hanger is the distance between the two holes. Make your next bend, then cut your hanger so there's another 5 or 6 cm's on it.
So you'll have a nice U shaped tool with two even legs! Go ahead and make yourself a second one of these.

Now, feed your two new tools into the holes in the face of the head unit. Gentle but firm, they should push nearly all the way flush with the face of the unit, if not, it doesn't matter. With any luck, you'll now be able to pull on the head unit and it should slide out freely!

That's how to dismantle the car. Did you need any tips on wiring or anything else?

With the wiring of the speakers, make sure you get the phasing correct. + to +, - to -. The speakers are easy, just take note of what tab the wires went to.

This is what I found in another post....

    VN - VZ

    Accesories (12v switched) - Yellow
    Constant 12v - Orange/White
    Illumination - Brown/White
    Earth - Black/White
    12V OUTPUT (antenna/amp) - Yellow/Red
Radio Mute - Yellow/Black (VT onwards)
Antenna up - White (VR onwards)
Antenna down - Blue (VR onwards)
Illumination OUTPUT - Grey (VT onwards)

    Speakers
    Front Left (+) - Tan
    Front Left (-) - Grey
    Front Right (+) - Light/Green
    Front Right (-) - Dark/Green
    Rear Left (+) - Brown/Black
    Rear Left (-) - Yellow/Blue
    Rear Right (+) - Blue/Orange
    Rear Right (-) - Blue/Black

If you've got 'Antenna UP/DOWN' buttons, apparently you have to raise your antenna fully then turn the radio off then swap the head units. Someone else may have more info on this.

    Good luck

I'm pretty sure it's right at the head unit, and according to Eurovox. I have a feeling it changes at the rear door speakers. That would not be hard to work out - as I said before, take note of the wire colours connected at the speakers.

Check the H/U colours before cutting anything.

Yeah those wiring colours are correct, and should be also the same at each speaker.
A good way to double check that the wires are correct is to get a normal "AA" battery and touch each wire to each end of the battery, you should hear the speaker in question crackle......this confirms the wiring is correct.

I've also used a 6v battery in the past to check speaker phasing (make sure the cones all go in the same direction).
