hey
today i bought a new headunit and 4 new speakers. the front ones have splits and i got MDF rings as well. how would i go about wiring it up. am hoping to have the back ones in the door as well.. its a vk sl sedan
thanks
Well you will need to run new wiring for the speakers, you'll also need to tap into a constant power wire for your head-unit. Theres a few possibilities there, one is to run your own power cable straight from the battery (fused within 30cm of the terminal), two is to tap into the clock's constant power wire and three is to tap into the brake light switch's constant power.
I would recommend the first one, although im told the second and third one works fine too.
I would also make a new earth for the head-unit (find a good bit of metal, sand back the paint and attach a wire to it with a ring terminal and a self tapper). Accessories power should be in the stock stereo loom.
The front splits will need those MDF spacers, the doors arent the deepest around. You will need to drill holes in the pillar and the door and use grommits to run the cables into the doors. As far as the rear speakers go, i dont think you'll have room for speakers in the rear doors because of the window winders, im fairly sure the parcel shelf has holes already in the metal, all you'll need to do is remove the board and cut your own holes in it to mount the speakers. Run the rear speaker cables down each side of the car (under those black plastic sill covers that just unclip) and up the sides of the rear seat.
Hopes this gives you a fair idea![]()

thanks.. how would i get the cables from the back of the stereo to the speakers..and how would i install the splits??
thanks
Feed each cable down each side of the stereo cavity (when the stereo isnt fitted ofcourse) and they should come out on either side of the centre console / shifter area, then just run them up to the footwell / dash area and down through the kick panels and into each sill etc.
You will need to cut some metal from the door itself to allow for the magnets, mark your speaker cutouts on each door trim (with the door trim on the door), remove the door trim and cut it, then replace the trim and mark out the metal. Cut out the peice of metal, repeat for the other side. Ive found right in the bottom front corner is the best spot, and you dont have to worry about the window winder or window runners inside the door.
The tweeters and crossovers are a little more detailed, ideally you dont want the crossovers inside the door itself, so what i suggest you do is mount the crossover in the kick panel (behind that piece of plastic) and mount the tweeter in the top corner of the kick panel itself. Then just run the wiring for the woofer into the door. Re-install the door trims and mount each speaker spacer (screw it straight into the metal) and then wire up and screw the woofer into the spacer.
Use the angled mounts for the tweeters and adjust them up a little so they kinda point towards the opposite headrest.

thanks.. will do that soon. what kind of cable should i use??
thanks
If you mean speaker wiring then anything around the 14-16awg mark should be fine.

ok.. how would i run power straight from the battery??
Through the clutch cable grommit? If you have a manual then im not sure where you could go through the firewall, just look around for a decent hole / grommit and cut a hole in it and feed the cable through. Then just run the cable down the drivers side of the car and into the boot or wherever you wanna mount the amp. Run the RCA cables down the opposite side.

thanks....
How'd you go with the install? Did you fit 6.5"s in the rear or 6x9's?
Haven't done it yet. Will do it after rego. Don't want to give them anything to fail me for.
