hi all,
i started a thread a month ago about wiring my 2 kicker comp vr subs (2ohms) to my kicker 750.1 zx monobloc. Eventually got them to work...however i cant take my volume higher them 20 (jvc head unit) before the monobloc cuts out and the protect mode light comes on. (not very loud!)
i have the subs wired in series and i cant understand whats going wrong! please dont tell me the monobloc cant handle the two subs
if anyone cares enoughhere is the link to the manual for the monobloc http://www.kicker.com/sites/default/...0f01%20web.pdf
cheers.
OK so it probably isnt an impedance problem then, and more than likely not a heat related problem. Could be a voltage problem, get a multimeter on the terminals when it goes into protect, it might be a problem in the power cable / fuse / fuseholder.

hmmm what readings should i be looking for?
is my onobloc right for the two subs?
sorry im just new to the car audio game!
Yeah basically any amp will power any sub/s, provided the impedance of the sub/s arent lower than the amp's rated impedance. In your situation that part is fine.
Put your multimeter on the amps + and - terminals and get someone to turn the volume up slowly, the voltage should stay above 11.5v at all times. If it dosent check the battery with your multimeter and see if your getting similar voltages when the stereo gets turned up. If theres a major difference (more than 0.5v) then theres a problem with the power cable, the earth cable or the fuse / holder.
Also, where / how have you earthed the amp, and what size power / earth cables are you using?

my thought is use 4 or 2 gauge wire if your not
use good earth strap file back paint on car for earth (this is a bit overkill but why not)
make sure alternator is good maby repalce battery with a 600cca one
and fuse should be bout 80amp from memery maby 100
if this is all fine then there should be no voltage drop to the amp
you said it happens at low volume so it is not a cap porb (dont need caps if got big batterys)
other than that i dont know it could be falty amp or just getting too hot
i have earthed it onto the bolt that you use for the baby seat, im using a 6 gauge stinger wiring kit. Should i look into buying a 4 gauge kit? Also, where / how have you earthed the amp, and what size power / earth cables are you using?
The battery i'm running is the bosch heavy duty one, was brand new when i first got the car!
The wiring size seems fine, thats not the issue. I would try re-locating the earth to a better spot, im not sure about the VTs but alot of the earlier commodores had the parcel shelf spot welded into place, which isnt good for conductivity. It might not be the problem, but worth a try. If its still the same then check the voltages.

as mentioned measure your voltage drop to narrow down the problem.
either that or you may not actually have your subs wired correctly. are you sure they are in series? you should wire as per diagram 2 anyway when you fix your protect issue.

hmm ive wired them like the ones pictured in diagram 1, i might try to wire them as per diagram 2 tonight and see what happens, ill also check the voltages tonight and re-locate the earth point.
on another note altogether does any one know if 16cm speakers will fit into vt doors?
16cm=6.29 inches?
im looking at something like this https://web1.pioneer.com.au/itf/phx/phoenix.nsf/Index
Well if youve wired them like diagram one in that link then you'll have an impedance thats too low for your amp. Are your subs dual voice coil 2 ohm?
150db in a commodore =
yes they are......which way hould i be wiring them then?
Like the one in figure 2. At the moment they are wired to 0.5 ohm, something the amp will not like at all.
Oh yeah, 16cm speakers will fit fine![]()
150db in a commodore =
haha thanks man ill grab some speaker wire and see what happens!
any wattage for the speakers should be fine? any advice on which i should get outta....
2 way speakers 180 watt
or dual cone 160 watt
both are pioneer speakers going cheap off the pioneer website.
Yes, you win a prize Joe Peeps....just pay the postage and its yours
The two ways will be better at producing the higher frequencies as they have a tweeter, the dual cones have a "whizzer" cone in the centre, which i supposed to increase the highs, but dosent work very well.
So yeah, the 2 ways.

haha thanks!
just had a look at jb for some wiring kits with the 4ga power cable.....wow they are expensive! even for just a 2 channel kit....
put a relay in the remote turn on lead
my amp did that as well
If you just need some power cable jaycar sell it off the reel for a few dollars a metre![]()
i think holdenboy has it right at 0.5ohm ive only seen 1 amp that can go to .5 ohm and it was hifonics
so the speakers need to be changed
Theres plenty of amps that will be stable at 0.5 ohm. The main problem is they draw more current, so they need a good battery or batteries to supply the amp. I run my Schneider SPA7000x at 0.5 ohm daily without any dramas. Amps like the DD Z1 / DD Z1A / DD Z2, Spl Dynamics D6, E Audio 5000 etc etc all can be run at 0.5ohm daily without a problem. Hell some of these amps get run at 0.25 ohm and less for competitions
Yeah Jaycar sell 4awg cable for $8.90 per metre, so for 5m $44.50 if my maths is correct, big one last night so correct me if im wrong![]()

haha thats okay how many metres am i looking at getting?
Yeah their costs went up after copper went through the roof. They kept it the same for a few months, then released a notice saying they cant keep to the same pricing etc etc.
pac3y, i'd say 5-6m at most.....you can always take out the 6awg and measure it to be safe![]()

haha beat me to it, its gotta come out anyways!
