    Default Box for 6x9s?

I am going to build a box to fit some 6x9s for my Hiace.. is there any specific guide lines to stick to for the dimensions? Is there such a thing as 'too small' or 'too big'? And will I need to have the boxes sealed or ported?

    Cheers

I'll post back with pics when I get it done.. might be a while cos I can't have them till my birthday in a few weeks lol.

oh look mate, you can go into the science for them if you want. But yeah, there is too big and there is too small. As a typical rule of theumb, those boxes you can buy...way too small. Shoot for around about .5-.75 cu.ft. per speaker this will keep them nice and tight. No bigger then a 1co. ft. per speaker. I wouldn't vent them, but nothing stopping you from doing that. I would keep them sealed so you can hit them with as much power as they are rated at.
You put you left foot in, your put your right foot in , you take your left foot out and you slide it all about!

So roughly half the size you would need for, say, a 10 inch sub?

Also, what about some sort of sound deadening material for inside? I have seen that they pack those pre-made ones with white fluff.. will that do anything?

I know these sounds like stupid questions but I haven't had anything to do with car stereos for quite a few years now lol.

I wouldn't say thats half the size...but sort of? lol. A nice thin lining against the walls will help remove any standing waves but is not necessary...all though, you can pack it in to make the box appear "bigger" if you need

Right, I might be slapping the boxes together this weekend... whats better, MDF or is particle/chip board better? I have access to endless supplies of chip board so I am hoping it will be fine.

I think particle board should be fine as its a composite material (the reason timber etc isnt generally used is due to the varying consistency of a 'natural' piece of wood). The only problem I could see is that it isn't as dense as MDF. If you have heaps lying around I'd say give it a go, and if it doesn't work out go the MDF.

MDF is ideal and a bare requirement for subs for 6x9s.....cut away at the part. board dude. It will work just fine.

Box is built and is installed. I just need to carpet it now.. which should be next weekends project. It is probably on the 'large side' of what I should have... but it sounds awesome in the van!

Quick pic.. more to come when I carpet it.

ill give you a top tip with the carpetting... you could get carpet.... or professional audio cover.

You could spend money on doing it...

or if you got kids you can nip into their craft kit (or go to a art shop, for about 10c a sheet) some felting strips and some glue and you can carpet it out well.

Did it with my subwoofer box, looks like a professional speaker now, give it a shot if you want to do it on the cheap. can post up pix and a guide if you want but its pretty much childsplay and makes it sound awesome, took me 30m to do

If you ever want to upgrade those you sooo need to get some of these: Shopping Secure - Car Audio Specialists - VIBE BlackDeath QB69

I would love to have someone use them in an application similar to yours so that I can get feedback to help me recommend bass upgrades for other ute drivers.
