Vr/vs Ute Subwoofer Enclosure

Has anybody got pics or design drawings of the ever popular, sub-in-long-range-tank-well, in a VR/VS Ute tray?

I've heard of so many people taking this install option, but never actually clapped eyes on one in real life.

After months of sidetracking through other projects, coupled with an extensive list of, 'Yeh buddy, we can do it.' and 'Man, It'll ####ing hammer, for sure. I'll have to work it out properly though.' style dismissals, I finally find the stereo install job at the top of the list.

I'm mainly interested in the optimum driver placement and overall box design.

Water-proofing and sound deadening are also issues to look at. Would that silver matting people use in their boot lids etc. be appropriate for lining the tray's access panel and the surrounding well? I can't for the life of me think of the bloody name but it's quite malleable prior to application and then it sets rock hard if I recall correctly.

Would MDF be an appropriate material or will I find that plywood is more suited to the application?

Any photographs would also assist greatly.

I would go for the MDF mainly because its a manufactured material and has better absorbtion and you wont get as much reflection. Good luck and post pics when your finished

i have a setup like what you are talking about installed in my VS ute. very sorry but i dont have the pics of the box. but ill tell you though, the sound the comes out of it is awesome. even for a 10" sub, it pumps. i have had no problems with water/moisture either. one thing i have noticed is (traveling on dirt roads sometimes to work) dust is a problem. i have been driving along and i could see the dust coming in from underneath the seat! i have had to pull out the seat and vacuum all the dust up it gets that bad sometimes. underneath where the sub sits there is 6 small holes. i got some rubber plugs and glued them in. this has stopped alot of the dust, but you cant stop it all. also, you can feel the heat coming through aswell. its a little uncomfortable for the passenger feeling the heat coming up and blowing all over their legs.
i didnt make or install the box myself. i have some pics, but they are pretty crap, but they MAY help you, so if you would like i can send them to you. ill post a diagram of the dimensions... they may not be 100% right, but it was the best i could do whilst trying to stick my hand in a small hole!
i am not too sure where you live, but audiotech in tuggeranong, ACT, usually have boxes in stock. they cost 150.
i have no material to deaden the sound in my ute and i have no worries with vibration.

its a pheonix gold. umm, not sure of the model number, but i was told that it was idea for such a small space

never heard of any brand called pheniox gold, oh well you learn something new every day

its a brand from the states i think. not bad quality. alot of people get it confused with 'california gold' which is a cheap and extremly nasty brand!

After following advice in this forum, I'm putting a box next to the tank, under the floor of the ute.
You can buy custom boxes from any car audio specialist, but expect to pay from $240 to $400! (that's an empty box!)
I designed one myself and I'm getting a local cabinet maker to construct one for $50.
I'll be running this 'ported' box into the inspection port behind the left seat. The box will be painted, or even a layer of glass to weatherproof it.
Sealing the box should avoid the dust water issues, and also avoid reducing heat build up next to a fuel tank, which could occur if I blocked all the holes in this area.
Any thoughts or comments?

Yeah mate! The box should be ready this week, I'll take some shots as I fit it.
The design follows the box that I saw on this forum, but rather than the 10" at one end, I'm putting in a 'bulkhead' to mount the speaker internally in the box. That'll give me a sealed ported box and the ability to change the speaker down the track by unscrewing the lid. I envisage the ported tube Approx. 100mm, will be heavily sealed with silicon as will the box, so it will be an extension of the cabin, if you know what I mean!

Bloody cabinet maker let me down, and I won't be back for two weeks! Relaxed North QLD lifestyle I s'pose, gotta go with the flow...

I'm a bit concerned about the size of the box for resonance reasons, but a 10" should be ok...

Weathering will not be an issue, and a ute is a small area to provide an airconditioned sound enclosure!

Righto, picked up the box and installed it this arvo. In hindsight the box could've been bigger, with a better depth for the sub.

The sound is bloody good, fills the cabin, but does not intrude too much outside.

Tonkins car audio sell a similar box for $140, im thinking about it, mmmm spend $1k and have a pretty good system or spend $4k and have a system that powerful it could crack my hard cover. mmmmm its got to be the expensive one..

How much do you spend for what you need?

I'm tryin' not to sound like a krusty old runt, but the 10" box I've put in me ute sounds bloody good.

My nephew's (auto)salon car, is undriveable on most roads, and the sub rumbles that much it overpowers all other frequencies.

My son's mates car won an audio comp, but I find it just as bloody overpoweringly useless.

And I still reckon a large diameter sub cannot handle fast bass as well.

At 45, I welcome comment!

All depends on the speaker design. Stiffness of rubber suspension, weight of the cone, how much volts and amps you can drive it with etc etc.

yeah it is a waste, i would like to compeate not all too seriously though, the remote gain can be turned down when just crusing, and around the burbs, but when i hit jetty rd down the Bay, its got to be gain up. im the type of person that buys the best, even if i dont need it, with my job, (floor and wall tiler) i earn plenty of money, two weeks ago i earnt $2800 after tax, not bad for 6.5 days work. not all the ime i get jobs like that though. but when they come along i spend big. i appreciate you imput Ute'r'us,

Yea these guys are great! They asked how much I want to spend and got me a good Alpine sys for $1300 which Im happy with. Include deck,amp,splits and 10" sub( as the picture from previous post) into my VG. Great sound and i think any more you would have consider vibrations ( coz cranking would make those annoying shudders)
