I`ve got a 1000w max (500w RMS) amp can I use a 8 gauge 800w max power wire or do I have to use something capable of/or more than 1000w, 4 gauge 1200w? even though I will not use the maximum output to the sub ie gain, but still use max volume (not sure that matters).
I'd personally go the 4 gauge, the risk of damage from melting the cable isn't worth it, spend the extra few dollars and get 4-gauge.

4 gauge (4 AWG). I would base it around fuse amperage though, not power rating. My 125x4 amp needs 90 amps worth of fuses, so 4 AWG is suffice.

I have always just used the biggest wire that fits in the terminals. Always safe that way
