Default help wanted on head unit

    hey there guys,
A mates looking at purchasing a new head unit on his car and we are both noobs.
Ive been reading up on the site but still not sure on what to go for.
The unit needs to be single din and he is on a budget of no more then $300.
The sound system will start of pretty basically but hopefully upgrade to higher quality stuff later on ( speakers, subs ect. )

The unit were looking at is the PIONEER DEH-4150SD. Basically looking for a unit with a good menu and features ( EQ. presets ) and good sound quality of course.
Can purchase it for around 200. Is that a good price? are there other units on the market that would be better for a smiler price? any help would be great!

Here is a list of the features:
o Built-in SD memory card slot (SDHC compatible)
o Direct AUX-in by mini jack (front)
o Front USB direct connection: USB 2.0 (full speed)
o Direct connection for iPod and iPhone (use with CD-IU50)
    o Advanced Sound Retriever
    o EEQ 3-band parametric equalizer
    o Rotary Commander
    o Direct Sub Drive
    o 2 RCA pre-outs: selectable (front + rear/front + subwoofer)
    o Wired remote control
    And picture:

I cant help with that head unit but I can definitely help with the speakers/subs when hes ready.

Check out my site in my signature

Also, having a head unit with 3 RCA pre-outs rather than 2 will assist in tuning a larger system but for most intents and purposes I think that the one you have chosen would be sufficient.

well lets see here, im running all sotck speakers in my VS Calais and cos of the head unit being pretty powerful haha i just blew all my speakers with loudness off and bass off lol..imo this head unit will be able to cope well with big sound set ups and it has 2 pre outs which means (i think) Front + Rear or Front + Sub
if you want to run fronts rears with out an amp but with a sub get another head unit which has 3 rca pre outs i think im right :P, but apart from that its one of the best Head Units going around especially if you get it for $200 instead of $450 like i did

I've used pioneer headunits for about 4 years now in a couple different cars without a problem. IMO they are some of the most reliable basic units getting around.

2 pre-outs mean you can send signal to 2 seperate amps (usually sub + fronts), so if you are ever planning on using an amp for more than just a sub you will need more than 1 RCA out.

Just a hint though, when you install it, leave the bass & loudness off as they are a quick way to mess up your sound and kill speakers
