    Default Replace VX Double Din Headunit

    Hello Just Commodore community,

    I have been recently given a 2001 Commodore VX Equipe by my parents and i am wanting to replace the headunit with a single din one and not sure how to go about it.

    I am wanting to change it because i want a headunit with a little more connectivity. In terms of parts i need to buy such as the spacer to fill the gap below the single din headunit, what else am i needing to buy? I am not very experienced at all with wiring up cars, is it hard to replace the headunit?

    I am not at all wanting to touch the speakers now, maybe later

    I have posted here because you guys are the masters of commodores!

    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Regards,

    You can buy pockets from JB Hi-Fi or any decent car audio reseller for about $20. To remove the stock headunit just get two lengths of wire and curl them around and push them through the holes on each side of the stock HU and pull.

    Yep as SabbathSS said a single DIN "pocket" is all thats needed, get your coathanger wire bent into "U" shapes and insert them into the two holes on either side of the stock unit. Then just pull the unit out towards you. It may take some time to get it out with that wire, but persistance is the key

    You'll either need to solder/tape your new wiring loom onto the old one or buy an adaptor that plugs into the stock wiring loom and then connect the wires from your new stereo. Heres the adaptor if your not keen on chopping / soldering the stock loom:
    AP1784H : Holden Commodore VT- VX Wiring Harness 1997 - 01 :: Harnesses

    Now as far as mounting the head-unit itself goes, its a very tight fit so all that is needed is to insert the metal "cage" (comes with the new unit) into the top "hole", it'll be a mission to do, especially for your first time but i can say IT DOES FIT!! take your time and you'll get it in there. Once thats done just wire the new unit up and slot the unit into the "cage".
    Then get yourself one of these:
    FP9014 | Aerpro Ford/Mazda Snap In Pocket

    In the end you'll get something like the pics below (install i did on a VX)
