Hey,
I'm heading up to Adelaide next week and tihnking of grabbing some speakers from JB-Hifi until I can afford some really good quality ones.
Basically my question is what is the difference between "Watts" and "Watt RMS"
Car Sound Speakers
^^ That link there is there current ones there selling so I want to grab something form there, looking at some splits with tweeters. Any recommendations from there?
Watts RMS is a international yardstick for measuring alternating power, like the output from audio appliances. Most other acronyms are inflated bullshit designed to make shit look way better than it actually is. Stick to RMS and you can pretty much accuratly compare products from different companies.
I'm assuming that the plain "watts" listed in the advert are "peak". It is the absolute maximum the speaker can handle for a very brief time. Stick with RMS. Then you are comparing apples with apples.

Oh right, I understand. Cheers mate.
So basically speakers that are in "watts" is there supposedly highest peak but chances are it would never get to that watts? Or even if it did not for very long.
Its sort of hypotheticaly what it can get on paper, but may not get it in real life or if it does it will be for a few seconds at best, always go with rms watts mate,
Cheers.
You only need to look at power ratings of speakers if you are going to run them off an amp.
They are a measure of how much power you can SUPPLY to them safely.
PEAK/MAX power (with speakers it will be 100-300ish watts) is how much the speakers can take for a very short amount of time
RMS power (will be under 100w) is how much power they can handle continuously, ie listening to music.
BUT! If you are just running them off the headunit they will be getting less than 20wrms, so the power handling of the speakers doesn't mean jack
Don't buy speakers because of their power handling, have a listen to them and buy what sounds good.
The one good thing I'll say about JB is that they have a good sound board.
Oh, and depending how fussy you are about your music, if you were to buy those type-s splits you might not need to upgrade again. They are only basic, but still a solid upgrade from standard that will play both much louder and clearer

Thanks for that post Philty, helped clear it up more man.
Might grab those type-s splits they look alright. Is 80 watt RMS alright?
The question is, does 80wrms even matter? As I just said, if you are running them off the headunit then power figures mean jack.
You are better off heading in and having a listen, then deciding what you want. The MB quarts might sound better but its been a long time since I heard them
