I was cleaning some of my stuff out of my Dad's shed the other day and I dug out this old akai hi fi speaker I found at a rubbish tip once. Pictures attached. Its got a tweeter, mid range, and ten inch woofer. Its vented as well. The woofer is blown, so I was thinking of removing the tweeter and mid range and blocking them off and replacing the woofer with a 10" sub. It would make for a fairly compact sub for my car. So my first question is, is it worth doing? Is then any change of getting half decent bass out of it? I don't need huge bass. At the moment I have 2 old 12 inch rockford subs running off a bridged 2 channel pioneer amp thats about 150watts and I'm not driving them very hard. But they just take up too much damn room. So if I put a good quality sub in this box, could I hope for half reasonable sound, and if I did, would I be better to leave it vented or seal it up completely? The box measures 570 x 330 x 265.
Cheers

Four commodores and counting.
If you're going to buy a half decent sub, get a half decent box to make it sound as good as possible.
That box is 1.76cubic foot which is way too large for a sealed 10" sub. It might be the right volume for vented/ported but it's still just a thin timber box not made for the pressure produced by an actual subwoofer.
Ported enclosures must be vary carefully built and they must have the correct shape and it is crucial for the port to be the correct length and tuned or it will sound like absolute crap. each individual sub has an enclosure size that is specific to its model, so it will be hard to find a 10inch sub that needs a 1.76cubic foot box vented, and chances are the port will not be the correct diamter or length.
Best thing to do it buy a $25 sheet of 18mm mdf and knock up a box mate.
