This post should not be deleted as it refers to cars that do not drive on the roads thus not suggesting and illegal mod to a vehicle that would be driven on public roads.
Hi, you need to cut the metal under the parcel shelf. It makes the car unroadworthy as you are probably already aware and in no way am i suggesting that you do this to your vehicle if you plan to drive it on public roadways.
First you need to mark the area to cut, you do this by using a 6x9 template which is the size of the hole the 6x9 sits in. You can use the 6x9 grill that comes with the speaker or a cardboard cutout.
Remove the parcel shelf and remove the 6 inch speakers. This also involves removing the backseat and back rests. Kneeling in the car and facing the rear place the 6x9 template over the 6 inch hole so it overlaps the valley in the parcel shelf. Mark with black marker inside the 6x9 template so it goes around the 6 inch hole and towards the front and mark down into the valley so you see a U shaped mark. That is the metal you need to cut in order to mount the 6x9 flush with the parcel shelf. You can cut the hole a few different ways. One by drilling a series of 1/8 inch holes along the marked line and using tin snips to cut out the metal or using a tool called a nibler which is a lot easier.
Once the hole is cut the parcel shelf also needs to be marked with the same template and cut with a jigsaw or box cutter.
Install parcel shelf and fit 6x9 speaker to make sure it fits. If so the two screws closest to the front needs to be fastened to the shelf with speed clips underneath by placing the speed clips by hand underneath by lifting up the shelf and using a stubby screwdriver to screw into the clip underneath.
The screws closest the the rear are harder to fasten because of difficulty from the windcreen. A right angle screw driver adapter fitted to your cordless drill is the best way to do this and it allows the speaker to be directly screwed into the metal. One adapter is called a scewdriver and can be purchased from Total Tools and is one of the smaller easier to reach small places adapter on the market and can cost up to 70 dollars. Cheaper versions are bigger and dont allow the screw to be fastened to the metal.
Otherwise just get some spacers. http://www.aerpro.com.au/list.php?pc...s&cat_sno=They don't look pretty, but it's your only legal way of doing it.I've actually done it the illeagal way before, and not only was it time consuming, it was just a pain in the arse. That metal under the shelf, mine was quite brittle, i got all sorts of shit in my eyes, i couldnt use glasses because they would fog up because it was so hot in the boot, and i even set part of my boot carpet on fire!!
Hahah, the joys of learning, yeah it is a lot harder but its painfull for me to just look at those spacers.
Don't bother man your better off running some 6" 3ways under the shelf and running a sub if you want a little bass run a 10" a lot neater then going 6x9
