Hey everyone, first post, had a look and i dont think it's been asked before.
Want to upgrade the crappy 15watt cardboard speakers in my VZ executive wagon but dont want to go to the hassle of upgrading the headunit. I've got a pair of Pioneer 3 way 220watt speakers from my old car I was hoping to put in the front doors and maybe some cheap 2 way 100watt type speakers for the back doors.
Will the 2x 220watts in the front doors sound okay or should i just buy 4 lower powered speakers?
2 way or 3 way?
Any other suggestions?
Cheers!
If youve got the Pioneers then you might as well replace the fronts with them. Wattage isnt a big issue when youre powering them off the head-unit, as they will go as loud as the head-unit can push them if that makes sense.
2 or 3 way is up to you, i think its more of a marketing tool rather than sound.
As far as rear speakers go, you can upgrade them but you wont hear a huge difference anyway. I would just throw those Pioneers in the fronts and leave the rears stock. You wont get a big upgrade in sound, but it will be noticeable IMO.

Don't forget to also check the crap tweeters under the dash
Mine had torn in the left one
IMO I'd dis-connect them if your putting in the 3 ways.

thanks for the replies
i'll chuck in the 220 watt speakers in the front tomorrow and see how they sound, some people have said they might not sound any good due to the head unit being under powered
also a mate gave me a set of new pioneer 140ish watt 2 way speaker for free today, if the 220's dont sound any good i'll try them, probably leave the rear ones stock, couldn't fcked.
how do i disconnect the tweeter in the front?
i put the 3-way 220's in the front yesterday and it sounds much clearer now. also tried the 2-way 160's in the front and they didn't sound nearly as good. I've left the stock ones in the back for now but might see how the 160's go in the back later on, have a feeling that might be too much for the headunit, already have to turn the volume up a fair bit louder.
the tweeter in the front is now too loud, how do i disconnect it?
To disconnect the tweeter you need to remove the demister panels on the top of the dash near the windscreen. Start off by removing the dash side plates (where the vents join from the doors). Theres two or three screws to undo and they'll come off. From there you'll see a single screw at the top that holds the demsiter panels on, undo this and the panel should come out, there may be a clip or two holding it in place but with a little bit of force it'll come out.
Then you'll see the small tweeter in the corner where the pillar is, it'll have a screw holing it in place. Remove this screw, pull the tweeter out and unplug it![]()

i would throw the two-ways in the back doors mate. the 3-ways are a bit of a rip i reckon as said before just a marketing gag. I am a big big fan of the standard unit. At the end of the day ALL HUs are still only guna put out 60W RMS max so why waste your money buying a new HU when you can just buy and amp for a little bit more and have atleast 100w RMS. just my two cents worth.
Where can i get my hands on these magical 60w rms head units?
whoops i slipped lol meant to be 50
I would upgrade the rear ones too. A few people say why bother as you're not sitting in the back but my opinion is if you've got em, chuck em in. I put 60 watt ferris two or three ways in the front, got em for nothin. And I chucked some cheep shit 8" subs in parcel shelf of VY all off standard H/u and sounds good enough and loud enough for what I want.
'Ah well, I suppose it had to come to this.'
