Do you still want to use the tape deck? If so you'll need a switching unit to cut between each head unit.
Hi everyone,
Does anyone know/ have experience in installing a CD player without taking the current stock tape unit out? I want to keep the stock unit in my VN installed, but also stick the CD in.
I'm keeping the VN stock, and don't want to lose the biggest stock part of the console..
Cheers

I haven't lost my mind, it's backed up on tape somewhere
Yeah, I hadn't thought of that though..
I don't get it.Are you saying that you want to keep you factory radio cassette in place, but then add a CD player in another DIN?
Yeah, I wanna keep the tape deck in there, and put a CD player in the bottom DIN - I know there'll be screwing around with the bottom compartment but I can do that ok.. Just don't know about the wiring of it.
I have just done something like this in my vx. I put in an aftermarket headunit and kept the standard one so I can use all the stock controls, but have a better equalizer, ipod input and a cd player that plays mp3s.
Basically what I did was wire up a line out converter from a set of speakers wires from the stock unit to the aux input on my new headunit, then wired up all the speakers to the new headunit. Then put it in the glovebox.
works well, better than I thought. I will be adding a few amps soon which is easier now that I have RCA outputs.
Just had a change of heart.. If I keep the factory stereo unit, and install a wired FM transmitter, I could then run an AUX lead from the FM transmitter and have that come through the dash inside the bottom DIN.. The main thing I'd play music through is an iPod anyway..
Do you reckon this would work? And what the sound quality would be like (with new speakers of course)
It would still sound pretty bad, because even with replacement speakers, your limited to the capabilities of the factory radio cassette, as far as signal quality, in built amplication, along with its basic tuning options.
If you have a strong desire to keep the factory radio in place, for originality purposes, or whatever your reasons, then the only thing i could really suggest you do, is disconnect the factory radio, leaving it in place, and install an aftermarket unit in the glove box, and just control it from the drivers side, via remote control.
Your fascia would remain as is, and no one would know the unit is in the glove box unless they opened it.I did the same thing for some one with a VH, and they pretty happy with the outcome.
Did the VNs have the "CD input" on the stock unit? I know the VP/VR/VS did.
If so, just get yourself a MP3 player and use a 3.5mm-3.5mm headphone cable....
150db in a commodore =
Cheers HCVP, I reckon i'll disconnect the speakers etc from the factory deck and leave it powered - so the clock works still.. Then just wire a new cd player into the glovebox - it's a great idea!
They unfortunately didn't come with any inputs.. but even if they did I'd still be in the same siuation with a poor sound quality through the original deck
I added an aftermarket headunit to my vx stereo. wired it up so the stock one goes into the aux input of the aftermarket with a Line out converter. Then wired up the speakers to the aftermarket one. Still have all stock controls but I get better sound, equalizer and an ipod input. Mounted it in the glovebox, looks completely stock.
Interesting idea sleepa, I was thinking about something along those lines but didnt really know how or how it would work. So basically the aftermarket h/u is slave of the stock h/u, and effectly acts as an amplifier and eq, but with the added bonus of an aux input??
how exactly do you use the stock controls to use the aux input? do you have photos of this at all?
Cheers.
Sorry this is a bit late, but Yes, that is how I have set mine up. The Aux input has at the moment only got the line out converters running into it, but I am going to put another set of aux inputs in and a switch so I can plug in the ipod and switch from that to the stock headunit. Only problem with this way is you have to control volume and all ipod functions from the ipod itself. I can get some pics if you want.
The lineout converter is running from the stock headunit via the rear speaker outputs (which I cut off from the speakers), into the aux input. The aftermarket headunit is then running to all speakers. Hope that helps
