gday guys,
im just trying to help out a mate with his audio set up but i don't know to much myself.
This is the sub he will be buying. He is looking for a pretty cheap amp to power it as his budget is tight.
He went to super cheap auto and they guy told him that this would be able to run it.
I thought that even with that bridged it would still be under powering it by at least 200RMS.
Just wondering if you guys could shed some light on this and also recommend a cheap mono block to run the sub well.
I was thinking the amo would need to output around 400RMS at 4ohms ? is that right?
thanks heaps.
Yep that sounds like SCA to me, no idea.....175wrms will not do that sub justice, it'll run it just like any amp would, just nowhere near its full potential.
Youre right about 400wrms at 4 ohm....the higher the better.
Can i suggest he go with the dual voice coil model, its here. It'll enable the amp to run at 2 ohms, which suits monoblocks much more and produce more power (more bass!).
As far as recommendations go, it would depend on how much he's willing to spend, but heres a few anyway:
Kenwood KAC-8104D, 300wrms @ 4 ohms and 500wrms @ 2ohms, $220 @ Ryda
Clarion APX1301, 300wrms @ 4 ohms and 400wrms @ 2 ohms, $170 @ Ryda

Second a vote for the APX1301. I've used 2 of these in a setup for about 6 months and i couldn't fault them.I payed the same advertised price as that link (also purchased through RYDA)
Hard to find a mono block of similiar output for that price anywhere else.
thanks heaps for the feedback guys, i think he will go with the clarion amp..
what are your thoughts on that duel voice coil kenwood sub, is it good quality? how does it compare with others?
obviously its not the best because of the price but just wondering on some general feedback.
cheers
I haven't heard the 3012's, i've only heard the 3011's, which were a <$100 sub, and they were fairly good (for the money)
For $180, you could obviously pick up a better sub if you were to hunt around a bit, in the classifieds, ebay ect, but a better sub is going to require a better amp and so forth. So the DVC version in a ported enclosure would go fairly well with that amp, and won't break the bank.
Ive got the DVC version right here next to me, and will be installing it today. So i'll give you decent feedback once its done (also powering it off the 8104D). Box will only be sealed but with the option of porting if the bass output isnt adequate for the customer. Will post pics etc in the post your system pics thread.
