HI all, got a little question here, I want to install a dvdplayer head unit without taking out the original stereo. Iwant to mount it in the glove box and have a roof mounted screen. I basically just want to be able to switch it over when we watch dvds and use the original unit at all other times, has any one done this or have any advice on best way to do it? Should i just splice into the original unit and put a switch between them?
doing this isn't a real problem unless your original headunit doesnt have audo input like a AUX feed or rca inputs. not sure if an incar DVD players have internal amps i know my second DVD player only has RCA outputs which i feed into my main TV and then use the dual input on the TV to output to the rear screens. if your running amps then you would be able to route the rca's from the DVD player to the amps and use RCA splitters to input to the amps you would need a secondary remote wire with an inline switch as well if you were turning the stock headunit off.
hope this helps a little
Theres two way AFAIK:
1) Buy a stand-alone head-unit with DVD capabilities, and install in the glovebox etc. Get a switch with 3 positions (ON-OFF-ON) so you can switch between the two head-units, connect the switch to the accessories wire.
2) Buy a "slave" DVD player, no AM/FM tuner, no internal amplifier, just RCA outputs. Then you'll need to get your head-unit modified by someone like ASR (site sponsor) so it has an aux input (if possible). If thats not possible then connect the RCA audio outputs to a FM modulator, so all you need to do is tune your stock stereo into the frequency so get the sound from the DVD player.....most newer FM modulators have acceptable sound quality.
Personally, i'd go with number one.....only downside is adjusting the volume etc has to be done via the DVD player, if it has a remote (most do) then its abit easier.

cheers for the help, muchly appreciated, i will be using the 3 way switch and hook up to accessories
