What brand/model is the head unit? Did it come with an owners manual?
Most after market stereo's have a red wire, that needs to be hooked up to your ignition wire, this turns it on.
And a yellow wire, which needs a constant power, for memory.

Yep you could wire it directly to the battery (with a fuse within 30cm of the positive terminal). Or you can just use the Orange/White wire in the stock loom.

Well it depends, I'm not sure exactly what the colour codes are for VP.
You may need to buy a Gregory's manual first, to find out the correct colour codes.
On my VR & VS, I think it's: Yellow = Accessories, and Orange/Violet = Battery.

    Oh crap, that sux.. lol
Nah the ciggy lighter is accessories too, but if you trace back far enough in the harness, you 'may' be able to locate the original wiring(if you're lucky).
Failing that, either check you fuse panel, and locate the fuse for the stereo's constant power(should be separate from accessories).
Or the harder way, run a new wire through the fire wall to battery, through one of the rubber grommets.
As was said before, put an in-line fuse in close to the battery.
