Just wondering if any one could help me out/ recommend some ideas.
I have a VL SL and not wanting to cut any metal, so I was thinking of replacing the 4"s in the dash, maybe 6.5s in the parcel shelf and not too sure if 6"s would fit in the doors or if I'd have to get pods? Oh and not looking for a sub or running off amps for a while as it's not really affordable At the moment for me.
So if anyone could help me out with a set up along the lines of that would be great. Cheers
Larger speakers would fit in the door, but as you know, that would require a pod, and also modification's to your door trim. So that's going to come down to whether your up to modifying your interior's trim, or whether you want to maintain the vehicles originality.
There are quite a few good 4'' speakers on the market. However, they aren't cheap. You won't get simiiar levels of performance vs a larger diamater speaker for the same money, it's going to set you back more if you want to achieve good sound from a smaller, higher quality driver.
Without the use of an external amp, i'd find it a little difficult to reccomend even spending any money at all. As with any type of audio upgrade, you want to be sure that you are getting the very most out of every component you fit, so that you are getting your money's worth. So what i'm saying is, you could spend $500-700 (just a figure) but once it's all fitted, you won't have $500-700 worth of sound. Unfortunately it dosen't work that way.
If you were to add an external amp, let's say $300, including wiring/install, then you would be closer $800-$1000 worth of sound, as aposed to what you would have been left with earlier.
Your probably into the performance scene, so i guess it's a bit like fitting a turbo. You can fit a turbo to a somewhat standard motor, to get a small gain, but to get the most out of that turbo, you must follow up with injectors, re-map of the ECU, ect.
I think considering the age of the vehicle, and your budget, i'd definately be looking at buying from the used market.
