the stock stero on my VS has broken so im looking for a new system. im wanting something around the 500$ to replace my system. on the head all i want is ipod, cd and radio (pretty standard) and then some some front speakers.
A local shop is suggesting a alpine CDE-102ei head with some speakers and a power pack. all installed for around 800 bucks.
this system seems like overkill for what i want. im still looking for quality but dont want to send too much. is there any suggestions ppl would make?
hmm were are you located? i have front hertz splits and rear component hertz, i'll put them with a 100wrms 4chl amp for $400 if you want them. they all run sweet...that leaves you $100+ to spend on headunit.
im in melbourne (essendon)
do you have any pics?
The CDE102ei is suggested as the lowest i should go but costs 350$ is this really needed as a head unit or are there cheaper ones that will still do a good job?
Will you be installing it yourself?
Do you have anything in mind for future upgrades?
I'd forget about buying new at that price range. If you buy new, you'd be lucky to get a head unit, and a set of coaxials, maybe some cheap splits, but they wouldn't be much better than what's in place at the moment. The head unit itself though would provide somewhat of a increase.
If you were to buy second hand, you might (if your lucky) be able to pick of some front splits, and maybe some 6x9's for the rear. I'd look at 6x9's as aposed to 6-6.5'' coaxials for bang for your buck, and a cheap 4 channel amp to run both front and back, plus a cheap wiring kit.
Alpine's range of head unit's are fairly expensive when compared to what's available from other manafactuer's. They are good unit's none the less, but there other unit's out there which offer better value for money when on a tight budget.
Planning A System On A Budget
I suggest having a look at that thread, made for situations like this.

Hit the star under this post if it was any help to you =D
well after reading the guide i have put together a basic system that i think should work well though any adjustments would be welcomed.
Ryda Car Audio - Kenwood CVar Audio KFC-P605IE 6" Splits($158.85) - speakers $158
Kenwood KDC-U446 CD MP3 WMA iPod Headunit Car Stereo - eBay Players, Audio, Video, Car Parts, Accessories, Cars, Bikes, Boats. (end time 02-Jul-10 20:33:54 AEST) - head unit $175
NEW ALPINE KTP-445 KTP445 POWER UPGRADE FOR HEAD UNITS - eBay Other, Parts Accessories, Car Electronics, Electronics. (end time 28-Jun-10 02:28:02 AEST) (not from ebay) $145
i figure all this plus install should be around 500 - 600 bucks. the head unit RRPs at 379 and ryda have it at around 250 so i see 175 as a bargin. the speakers were chosen for there price and that the tweeters arent inside the speaker (is having seperate tweeters good or bad?)
the power pack was reccomended by my local sound shop, so i feel like it should be in there.
is there any additions/ changes people would make?
I have some future upgrades in mind.
- adding rear speakers as this set up keeps the stocks
- adding a subby
- adding a amp if need be.
Itchy i have seen that ambo its amazing. but i have been told cadence dont have the best build quality and i should steer clear of them. is there any truth to this.
i have found cadence to be reallly good in my experience
especially the amps i use to have cadence zrs-6000d and i actually preferred it over the alpine v power 650 (had to sell em not long ago cause i was short on cash but im looking for another cadence amp atm)
ive only ever had their higher level gear not the cheapo budget stuff they have
but i reckon their low end stuff wouldnt be the greatest
atm im using one of the subs in a big custom box and it sounds pretty dammm good
i am about to chuck a set of the splits in the back of my car over next few days
The speakers you are looking at are splits (Split component system) meaning the mid woofer, is seperate from the tweeter. With every split system, comes a crossover unit. The crossover unit is responsible for seperating the high and low frequencies between the tweeter and the mid woofer.
Split speakers offer better performance, and offer the advantage of mounting the tweeter up higher, or of axis, to the mid woofer. The other type of speaker, where you see the tweeter mounted in the centre of the mid woofer, is reffered to as a coaxial speaker.
The power pack from Alpine , is essentially a small 4 channel amplifier. All head unit's have a built in 4 channel amplifier. Power output provided from the head unit, is usually in the vicinity of 12-15 watts rms per channel. (anywhere between 45-65 peak). So the power pack puts out around 40 rms per channel, so there would be a noticible increase using it. 40 rms is sufficient, especially if your running your speakers in full range. However if you have plans to add a sub, then you may want to skip the power pack, because when your running your speakers on a high pass (HPF) they will handle a lot more power, meaning you would only be up for a second amp purcahse, so it's best to just get something suitable from the start ( if your budget allows)
The head unit is a good deal, and RYDA are also good to deal with, and offer quite resonable deals on shipping.
My advice, buy the head unit.
Get the front Kenwoods if you like them, or something similiar for the price.
Skip the power pack, and instead look at a set of replacement rear speakers,
At a later date when you can afford to, look to add a 4 channel amp.
Next, the installation side. Now the fronts can be a bit tricky, with removal of door trims, electrics, and so forth, so i would leave that for a professional installer if your not confident.
But rears are a sinch, even for someone who has never dealt with any type of stereo install before. So i'd definately look at fitting them yourself.
The head unit, allthough time consuming, is pretty straight forward, and there are a lot of guides avaliable which will practically walk you through it.
If you were able to install some of it yourself, then that leaves you more to spend on your components.

from the sound of it. what i think i will do is leave all the speakers stock (they all work as far as i am aware) and i will buy the head unit and then save up enough to buy the rest of the gear and get it installed.
All i am really wanting at the moment is a working stereo.
I am going to wait a few months untill i do any more major upgrades to the system as im on a trainee wage at the moment and dont have much spare cash. and i have to pay the car off
Yep thats a great idea, rather than buying average gear just buy one component at a time.....in the end you'll save money as you wont need to upgrade (well, thats the plan)
