Hi Guys,
I'm just in the process of setting up all my stereo gear in the VX.
I have an Alpine 9831 headunit which has 3 preouts etc.
Alpine CDA-9831 CD/MP3/WMA receiver with CD changer controls at Crutchfield.com
In terms of speakers I am looking at the following setup:
Idea 1:
6" Splits in the front
Nothing in the rear doors
6x9" speakers in the parcel shelf
All run off a 4 channel amp
Idea 2:
6" Splits in the front
6" coaxials in the rear doors
12" Sub
Fronts and sub run off a 4 channel amp
Idea 3:
6" Splits in the front
6x9's in the parcel shelf
12" sub
Front and rear speakers run off 1 amp
Sub off a mono block
Idea 4:
6" Splits in the front
6" Coaxials in the rear doors
12" sub
Front and rear speakers run off 1 amp
Sub off a mono block
Looking at running Type R Splits in the front:
Alpine Electronics of Australia
Either Type R 6x9's
Alpine Electronics of Australia
OR
Type R Coaxiels
Alpine Electronics of Australia
Not sure on sub yet....
Basically - I'm after sound quality - Whats the best setup? I think I've come up with a few decent combos so any advice appreciated!
Simon
Hot Red VX SS - 5.7L Gen3, Pacemaker tri-y's, Dual 2.5", 6 Speed, 3.47 LSD, 18" HSV Clubsport wheels
Stereo - Alpine 9887, JL 300/2, Audison LRx1.1k, Image Dynamics IDMAX 12", Focal 165VR's + Dynamat
Depending on how much your wanting to spend, but i'd go with idea 4 but power the rears off the head unit and the fronts off an amp / sub of a monoblock. This will obviously cost more than idea 2, so if money is an issue idea 2 is my second choice.
Also, why Type Rs for sound quality? Theres heaps of other options that will give me SQ:
Ryda Car Audio - Boston SC60 6" Component Speaker($298.85)
Shopping Secure - Car Audio Specialists - Audio Development AD6

Thats got me thinking...
If I went with idea 2 and spent some more on the front speakers.....I could easily add a second amp later for the sub and then run the rears off the amp too.
I'm aiming to keep the whole kit and kaboodle under a thousand bucks...
Is there any merit what so ever having 6x9's in the parcel shelf?

Yeah that would work ok, its almost always a good idea to spend as much as you can on one component then add more on later on.
Theres two uses IMO for 6x9s, one is for getting some extra bass output without a sub. The second is to get the most volume possible without custom work to the front doors etc.
If youre not after massive volume and your using a sub/s, then 6x9s arent a good choice.

Subwoofer Option: Shopping Secure - Car Audio Specialists - VIBE BlackAir 12
The BlackAir is a nice accurate subwoofer

Hmm, that looks like a pretty awesome sub Joe!
I'm in Adelaide
In keeping my 1000 dollar budget....If I went the AD6's, The Vibe Black Air sub and a 4 channel jaycar response amp....would that do to get me started? I'd just leave the stock speakers in the rear doors running off the headunit for the time being...
EDIT: Just noticed one big problem with my idea....the subs a dual voice coil....Hmm, needs more thought!

Should be fine.
I just checked and if I price matched the BlackAir it would come to $300 rather than $400.

Only thing is, good luck finding a 4-channel that can produce 550wrms on a bridged channel. Almost definitely need a mono-block amp.

It will run on as little as 300 with a good level of volume, the factory boxes from vibe are around 300rms and do just fine.
One example of an amp would be this thought: :: Ground Zero :: Amplifier / GZHA 4150XII
Its $660 so its not cheap but its definitely possible. That said getting 4 channels with 300rms bridged is far cheaper and easier.

What about this to drive the sub, because Joe if you didn't make a mistake with pricing, that is some of the cheapest power I have ever seen. Shopping Secure - Car Audio Specialists - Ground Zero Iridium GZIA 2230HPX
Hell I would just get 2 of these. One for AD6s and one for sub.

The 4 channel version is only $20 dearer, and will do 2 x 250, as aposed to 2 x 150, for the front stage. I'd go with that, that's some seriously good power for the money!!!
Righteo, I have made abit of progress!
I picked up a second hand DLS sub and a Response 2x150w rms amp and installed both of them yesterday with a 4g wiring run to the boot. Sounds quality from this sub is amazing!
So, I am left with deciding what to do with the rest of the system...
I had a listen to some Focal speakers at Tonkins here in Adelaide and they sounded absolutely awesome.
Focal Access 1 speakers and subwoofers
Focal Polyglass speakers and subwoofers <= probably the ones I'd go for
So with the pair of focal splits in the front, I was going to just chuck in a set of Alpine Type s coaxials in the rear doors for some fill.
That leads me to my next question, I'm going to need a good 4 channel amp....what are peoples recommendations?
