Hello everyone,
Well it's been sometime since i've done anything car audio related due to losing my license. In the next few months i will be getting it back, and i'm considering getting an old van of some sort. (Econovan, Hi-Ace ect)
Due to living in Cairns and the amount of rain we get, custom door setups, and expensive speakers are out of the question. I can't be getting in and out in the rain and having components get wet.
So, the speakers must be mounted behind me. Not ideal i know, but again not much i can do about it.
I'm thinking about 2 set's of high power 6x9's, (such as VIBE QB69's) running from a pair of bridged 4 channel amp's.
Question is, what type of enclosure to mount them in.
The options would be
-Ported
-Sealed
-IB
Obviously IB would be the cheapest, and easiest option. Has anyone done anything similiar? How did it sound , or how would it sound? As in bass response, clarity, getting the most out of the speakers ect?
Hey mate,
Have you thought about making up some fibreglass dash pods? You could mount the speakers in the corners where the windscreen meets the A pillar, face them slightly inwards away from any rain etc coming in from the open doors. That was you could still maintain an excellent sound stage while not wrecking your speakers

The only problem with doing that is their constant exposure to the sun.
Also, something like a 5'' dash mounted driver will mean the need to add a sub/s additional amps , enclousres ect.
I need loud full range drivers, which is where something like the qb69, or similiar, will fit the bill.

The QB69s perform very well in a ported enclosure. They will be capable of matching the bass response of a 12" subwoofer. I've already done it :P

Joe, what was the port tuning, how much did it sacrifice on overall volume?
Fair enough mate, sounds like you have thought things through very well, i agree that your idea would work very well in your situation. Also batteries are usually in the back of the van, so bonus for short runs of power cable.
