10" will offer a more punchy and precise bass, but will not be as loud as a 12". I'll assume both boxes are sealed considering your music taste.

EDIT: I use 10" subs for their awesome punchy bass, i listen to metal too.

Pretty hard to melt a voice coil in a sealed setup unless your really over powering it.

    What's the budget.

Why do you think its cooked mate? Holdenboy is a top bloke, he wouldnt sell dodgy stuff. What were your gains/lpf set at?

Also, that type X is a great SQ sub imo, though for the money some other people on here may be able to suggest something better.

It may be time for you to double up on the subs. Consider using a pair of these..
    Mach 5 Audio IXL 10 subwoofer Subwoofer - Mach 5 Audio IXL-10 [IXL-10.2.2] - $235.00 : Subwoofers Car/Home Theatre, Affordable Drivers Mach 5 Audio

Each at a 4ohm load would give you 500 rms to each sub from your amp @ 2 ohm. Build some good sealed enclosures for them, and i would rate them against basically anything else within that price range.

Quick vid if you've never seen or heard of them. A good set of cans will allow you to hear a bit of what of they are capable of during playback.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BpDAtuCJWeU

My opinions on a few things when people talk about sound quality.

Firstly, you can never have too much bass, or too much power either. It can simply be turned down, and will run cleaner, and more efficiently.
Before we can go talking about sound quality, first we have to have quantity. You need to have enough bass, that it will play cleanly at whatever volume level it is you choose to listen to.

For e.g- Take one $1000 SQ sub, rated to 500 rms, and pair it with a high end amplifier, then mount it in a suitable enclosure. Now allthough it is a SQ orientated sub, it's overall output level would most likely not be high enough for your needs. Meaning you would be running the sub to the point where you are losing it's sound quality attributes.

As for the enclosure for the Mach 5 IXL, i would be looking somewhere around the 1.5 cu ft sealed each sub. They are a very good all round sub, and would suit your listening needs fairly well IMO.

Id also consider purchasing a new amp, with a sub sonic filter. I'm fairly sure your amp dosen't have one. Now a lot of people say sub sonic filters are only needed on ported applications. But they also have one other benifit, especially when using smaller subs in a more SQ based install.

Say your listening to a song, at a moderate, to high volume level. Througout the song, you get a very low bass note, lets say 15 hz. Now this would most likely be enough to cause distortion through your sub. Setting your LPF, and subsonic filter correctly, will mean your sub's will only play in a selected fq range. You can effictively eliminate all distortion by doing this.

Can easily be done by clipping, that'll fry the voice coil/s of any sub in any enclosure.

Yeah im shocked to hear you blew the coil on the SPL Dynamics XTR 10"......i can get you a re-cone kit and instructions, probably cost around $100 shipped but i'd need to check. Firstly we need to address how / why the sub blew.

Just to re inforce what everyone is saying about Mach 5 subs i rate them pretty highly. HVCP got me onto them, helped me design the box and everything, finnaly got it wired up and working and the thing is nuts. With the gain set at 50 % im already getting an insane about of bass, like huge. Ive got a 12" IXL, powered by a 1000wrms response in a 4 cubic foot ported box, and im absolutely loving it. Only thing im gonna change is the box, starting a new build that will go behind the tail lights then up the side and over the hump. gonna be a weird box but will give me my boot space back and should sound pretty much the same. But for the time being the box i have is awesome!

    Give Mach 5 ago!

I listen to metal and punk, both of which have very fast bass, and have used 15's and now use 12's. 10" is not necessary for tight bass, just buy a decent sub and put it in the right box and the music will sound as it should.

search google for Frankies Auto Electrics they have a bass pack for the above.

Take Rob's advice with a grain of salt as he obviously hasn't heard much to compare that to.

Fusion may be good value for money but I can't believe anyone would think they're the best sounding product ever. Definitely no comparison to some of the subs already mentioned in this thread.

steer clear of fusion, trust me, the mondy saved buying cheaper audio gear is shown in your sound. your system is only as good as its weakest link, in the case of a fusion system, or more importanly a fusion "bass pack" your system is pretty weak.

I still think yiou should consider mach 5 stuff, for the money they are bounds ahead of anything else in the price range.

I'd support those for a low budget too - at ~$100 or each they sound great.
