    Default Speaker Wire

    Hi,

I'm going to replace the speaker wire in my car. The speakers I have are rated 200wrms @ 4ohm. I was thinking about running Selby Accoustic 12awg.

25m Selby Speaker Cable 12 AWG OFC 420 Strands 2 Cores - eBay, Cables, Electronics. (end time 23-Jun-10 14:47:08 AEST)

Recon this is alright wire? 420 strands x 0.10mm x 2 cores. 12gauge would be more than capable right?

I already done the mistake of buying 2x 5m of SuperCheap cable for $20 or something, and that crap most useless, the wires should snap off with the slightest bend (when out of the jacket). So I want something semi decent and 25meters for $59 is alright. 12AWG. Atleast I'll also have spare cable.

Yeah that'll do fine. If you end up running 200-300wrms into each of the mids then 12AWG would be my choice.

    Awesome, cheers for that HoldenBoy.
I was going to ask if there was going to be any problems getting connectors onto the cable and then onto the speaker but I won't be running the cable so it's not going to be my problem!

Just put my bid in XD $54.95 - 22hrs left. Thought I'd save my $5 ($59.95 Buyout) and I'll spend the extra $1 on Express Post

I would have used 8 guage, and have done in the past, and soldered rather than using connectors, crimps, ect. Connectors are fine when dealing with very small diamater wire, when you start using thicker stuff, its always best to solder.

Allthough i have been told that 8 guage is overkill, and unnessacary. But, when is anything overkill really?

8guage! lol. For speakers? I do recon thats overkill! But hey, why not. When people start dynamating the floors and roof that too me is overkill.

Sure why not. I can't see any negatives that could arrise from using a larger diamater than specified wire, for transmitting a signal to any component.

The negative is that it costs more and is more difficult to work with but if those issues aren't a problem for you, then there's no other reason not to. There'll be no benefit though

    what about weight?
4 runs of 8awg from boot to front will weigh a fair bit. And i'm gonna be running active splits, so that'd be 8 runs.
an extra person sitting in a car slows it down, so will extra wire, maybe not as much, but it all adds up. 12awg is already big enough for speakers imo.

I'm missing something here? If you're running 200wrms per channel then you have to be running an amps. Why not just mount the amp in the boot for the rear speakers and under the front passengers seat for the fronts? With active crossovers same thing since you have to use amps just mount the crossover and amps as close as possible to the speaker. Then you just need to run the input to the area.

Also a run of 8awg would be betwwen 0.5kg and 1kg so the weight would not be a huge issue. I think the rest of the stereo gear using active crossovers with the amps would be a lot more than that.

Putting amps in different locations means more power wiring.

I don't understand why you'd want to put your amps closer to your speakers... Speaker wire is not going to lose enough power to warrant that. I'm sorry, but this thread has turned stupid.

Clicky clicky to see how pointless your 8ga wire over 12ga wire is for speakers.

    Wow weight?
Do you also take out your spare wheel and all your tools so you carry less weight?
Do you think an extra kilo or 2 would decrease ur performance or fuel consumption of your vehicle by that much? you wouldn't even notice it.
