After many headaches and alot of time, the audio upgrade has been completed!!
A massive MASSIVE HUUUUUUUGE THANKS to Greg from ASR - you are THE MAN![]()
:goodjob: NEVER AGAIN WILL ANYONE ELSE TOUCH MY CAR (for this kinda work)
The headunit has been modified a 2nd time,by Greg and his work is much better than the previous hack job that's for sureUnfortunately with both Greg and I being so busy I wasn't able to use his services initially as I'd planned too and was in a rush to get it done so found another place that did the RCA mod and whom came highly recommended......however I would strongly disagree with this. I will say to their credit, that when I contacted them and explained my situation after some brief aggrivation, I received a full refund so not all was lost.
1st RCA mod completed, install H/D back into car and we have basically zero output and severe crackling/distortion. My installer basically went over every part of the kit and found no fault from replacement components or install.
A 2nd check before visiting Greg:
Symptom: Low/crackling output (inaudible music)
Cause: Installer used poor earthing location for amp.
Solution: Moved earth
Notes: Audible music now, but extremely WOEFUL bad engine whine when car running renders stereo unusable. Highly likely the issue was there prior but not picked up due to the poor earth/signal.
Seperate 'Stinger' Ground loop isolater ($40) makes this worse?!?!
Symptom: Engine whine
Cause: Original RCA Modification
Solution: Take my precious car to ASR and let Greg at it for a couple of hours.
Greg removed the RCA leads that had been soldered directly to my H/U main board (WTF!?!?!?) and installed a module to protect the H/U board/chips, provide new/better RCA leads and THANKFULLY also added a remote wire to allow the amp to auto switch on with the H/U.
Notes: No need for Stinger ground loop.
No bad noises on start up or shut down - ZERO engine interference. Fantasic SQ.
The Polk splits/sub seem to be bloody good. With the amp gain turned right down H/U can be turned up to MAX with zero distortion and well loud enough to vibrate your eyeballs!
I cannot recommend Gregs RCA/Remote wire modification high enough. Unlike my 1st experience, he was patient, calm, rational and followed a logical approach to get the job done and if HE wasn't satisified he kept at it until it was 100%, I didn't have to say I wasn't satisified and he treated my car and stereo as his own which I really appreciate on my 40K+ vehicle. He also allowed me to watch over his shoulder as he explained every part of what he was doing. Absolutely top guy, top job and I WILL be back to use his services again....and again and again![]()

Custom sub box utilises most of the spare room behind drivers seat and gives a good back massage![]()
Can post pics > but don't have any just yet of sub box so if anyone is keen I can throw a few up...
Anyone after specific information relating to the build or the components etc feel free to PM me.

I suffer from that same engine whine... therefore cant listen to music with low volume or me and everyone in there car are like wtf is that noise lol. I think i need a RCA solution
Depends where it's being introduced. I have experienced varying degree's of engine noise on various cars and all turned out to be slightly different problems/fixes.....
So it sounds like you're talking engine noise with stock stereo if you don't already have RCA mod done? Or are you using LOC or similar?
As mentioned, be very careful who you let 'add' the RCA leads to your OEM stereo......because that's where my engine noise was introduced, Greg's kit suffers none of this.
Just in case anyone thinkz it's cash for comment, I am in no way affiliated with Greg > simply a VERY VERY happy customer (and I can be hard to please), however the original RCA mod done by someone else was VERY bodgy,....AND cost twice as much as Greg charges.
The only time I get any buzz now is when I use my ipod whilst it's charging, and there's ways around that too but I am mostly listening to CDs due to the quality difference.....
So what's the story with your setup? I am far from an expert but my recent issues might help.. . . .
Good to see another happy customer.
Phreddy modded my old VY about 4 years ago and I'll be going back to see him for the VE next weekend.
I'm not sure he'd appreciate you using his full name on the internet though (I know I wouldn't lol). Oh, and this should probably be in the ASR section.
Thanks for that... Well i used to have:
Pioneer H/U
2x pioneer 6x9s
1x 12 pioneer sub
chatty brand 4 channel amp with the sub bridged etc
but that kep cutting out cause of lack of power when turned up... so since then i changed to
The same pioneer h/u
same 6x9s
i added 2x 6" in the front doors
and changed from the single 12" sub to 2x 15" subs with there own amp
so the 4 speakers are running off that chatty 4ch amp but i think they got lazy and didnt connect the front speakers to the amp cause i cant control the front speaker levels from my amp only the rear 6x9's
so im guessing something thats been added like the new amp isnt earth properly or they added some rca's or something i dunno...
I guess i just take it somewhere and spend more money on it lol cause its been like 1.5 years since i got the work done cause i lost my licence anyway they wont care bout my probs anymore i guess they just lose a customer
I suffered 2 issues with my VE ute - Firstly the earth, even though it looked like the perfect ideal place, was causing issues....(though the original RCA mod done by someone else was the actual main issue) with the poor earth I basically had zero music coming out - all just static and low level.....
Earth fixed instantly better but still suffered from engine whine/interference making the system unusable. Again Phreddy fixed this up in a jiffy (well a few hours but still no time at all) and I only have a SMALL amount of 'AMP' noise (with stereo on or off) this was detected by Phreddy at the time and it only showed up when the gain on the amp was turned up, so we turned it down cause it wtas plently loud enough.
Some tuning work showed it was setup all backwards,. Adjusted the frequency settings, NOW I could crank the amp, but notice a small amount of whine AND engine whine....the 'whine' is like when your guitar amp is on and not receiving a signal - kinda 'airy' > small amount of engine whine (with gain set at 1/5) which once there is some music you cannot hear it.
Overall very happy
So you ARE still getting engine noise / alternator whine after all?
Hey mate how much was the diy kit? Looking to get one myself!
Thanks for pointing out to me to re-read the first post as it just pointed out a second time that he initially bought the DIY kit and had it installed with another installer the first time round...
Was in the ASR section when I cam across this, which obviously your being familiar with you will know there arent a hell of a lot of threads in there so this was well within the first page of threads. Also you will be aware of the issue regarding PMing phreddy and not getting a response due to his workload, which I have experienced doing so in the past. Not that it is some horrible sin by any means to ask a question regarding a thread containing relevant information, in fact as it would seem I have in-fact done the right thing by many people on this forum who will always tell people "use the search function."
I suppose it was stupid of me not to PM the OP so that maybe I could get an answer publicly so that others can reference the information readily.
In conclusion, sorry for ruining your day by twisting your arm into clicking on the thread![]()
Nothing wrong with digging up an old thread IMO if it's relevant and the question hasn't been answered yet.
Good on ya for using the search function I say...
Sums it up nicely![]()
ehy what...?
