Need your help.
Looking for an Amp to run my SST-05's Active. Rated 50wrms @ 4ohm.
Which amplifier would you recommend?
I'm not sure if I should splurge out and get an Audison or Focal amp. Is it worth it?
or If I do splurge out has to be less than $500 and have good SQ quality/functonality which also needs to have decent output power to run SQ splits in the future.
I've got an old Alpine MRP-T220 (50wrms x 2) which I could use for now, but would it be sufficient enough to power the SST-05 or have the filters/frequency response/quality needed to run these tweeters active?
I've got a Alpine 9887 deck.
1. Buy a cheap amp to run the SST-05's, 75wrms x 2 @4ohm amplifier. For Example JL Audio G2250 which is 80wrms x 2 for $300? or will it sound like A$$?
2. Keep the MRP-T220 and run the SST's of that
3. Buy a Audison/Focal type <$500 SQ amp for future SQ splits (prob change splits in 1yr)

Just use the Alpine, IMO.

You wont need to worry about filters, all that can be done through the 9887![]()

I'm just going to throw a spanner in the works, and ask why you want to go active with a 2 way setup? . Passive sounds fine to me, and IMO i think if you compared an identical set of splits in both passive and active form in the same vehicle, 9/10 listeners wouldn't be able to tell the difference. I certainly know that i couldn't.
The positioning of your components will make a bigger difference than what the components themselves ever will.
The problem with achieving true sound quality, is mounting positions. Most cars have a location in the front lower half of the front doors, and a tweeter positioned anywher between the A pillar and the top corner of the dash.
With a 2 way setup, you have a single driver responsible for producing both mid bass, and midrange frequencies. Mounting the midbass drivers in the lower half of the door , allthough not completely ideal, is still acceptable. But moutning any midrange driver that far down, is not, no matter how good the components are.
I'd prefer to see you invest in a 3 way setup, rather than spending additional money in trying to extract minute amounts of increase out of a 2 way. At the end of the day, your money is going to go a whole lot further.

the old alpine units are under rated.. if you get it tested it would be putting out about 70-80 watts..
Not sure about that really, when you go active you can choose where the crossover points are plus can individually time align each speaker. Can also attenuate individual speakers rather than the whole side. also means the speakers get more power from the amps. Though it is only worth while if you actually know what you are doing and are willing to put in the effort to tune it. While you can get active to sound better, you can also make it sound worse
Ok so you can adjust the crossover point between your mid and high, but how far out either way would you want to adjust it anyway beyond what the standard passive point is set at. Unless your compensating for a lack of something, i'm yet to come across an active 2 way setup than i can honestly say i would prefer over a 3 way setup for the same money.
Just brought the Audison SRx2 for $325. New & Latest Model.
Still on the search for my Mid Drivers & Amp.
My Current setup is:
Alpine 9887,
SoundStream SST-05's amped by Audison SRx2
2x 10" Alpine Type S amped by Alpine MRP-M350?
Deck: Alpine 9887
Speakers: Hertz HSK165 XL
Amps: Audison SRx2, SRx4 & Alpine M350
Subs: 2x Alpine 10" Type S
Deutscher i have the W6 midbass driver from the AD6 set on it's own, you were interested i listening to. I have them up for sale, if your interested, i don't mind sending them out to you, and you can fit them for a week or so and see if you like them or not. If not just send them back, and i can re-list them.
Let me know if you have any interest.

No worries , just thought if you were straped for cash, since you allready have an amp , tweeters, and xover, i'd do them for $100 the pair. Something to get you going until you feel the need to upgrade.
