SSV Sub Woofers

Hi all,

Recently replaced all door speakers in my VE SS with 3 way Sony's, and have now been looking for some 8" free air subs to install in the rear parcel shelf in the OEM holes where the SSV subs are installed. I'm not into huge noise or sound offs so don’t want spend huge money, and don’t want to take up boot space, hence using the original holes, but I’ve been struggling to find anything for under $500 a pair for 8" subs. Out of simple curiosity I called Holden to get a price on the original subs, and to my absolute surprise was told they were $41 each. After I hung up I actually called back and spoke to another sales rep and confirmed that they were in fact $41. Now I know they are going to be no comparison to an aftermarket sub but for the fact they drop straight in and are only $80 it seems a fair solution. Are they going to make a difference or am I simply wasting my time?
P.S. makes me wonder what the OEM amp is worth as well.

There are plenty of 8 inch subs on the market that will fit your bill. Whether or not they state they are suitable for free air applications is irrelevant really, all speakers will perfrom in a free air setup.

One benifit when used in a full range setup is they generally offer a good increase in midbass, and can be a better alternative as aposed to installing a sub of similiar value due to the size of the vehicle.

The factory ones from Holden are OK for the money, i mean try finding anything else for $40 per unit.

Consider these, Shopping Secure - Car Audio Specialists - VIBE Space 8 i only suggest them because you said $500 for 2 subs, which is what they come to .

What are your sony 3 ways, are you talking about coaxials? If you are i'd be inclinded to look there first before anything else.

The sony's are 300watt 3 ways (coaxial). Probably not the best way to get great sound, but it made a huge difference to the originals and they fitted in the original spot in the doors. Your right about the 40 bucs for the OEM ones though, that’s why I called them twice to confirm the price, I mean I know they are going to be a pretty crappy speaker compared to an aftermarket job but hey, surely it’s gota be better than the dedicated woofer I’ve got now which is nothing . I guess it makes it more difficult as I want to retain the original look of the car. Interesting you note that free air or not it will be ok, maybe I should just get a couple of 8” subs not specifically dedicated to free air, as there is plenty of them around at a reasonable price.
