    Default Sub and Amp Question..

    Hey Guys, Quick Question,
Ive been looking around for ages on a sound setup for my VY commodore, and now ive decided to probably run a sub on its own amplifier, it seams to be an alright idea from what i understand.

So heres my plan, ive gone and brought a "12" Apline SWR-1242D Type R Subwoofer" .. so now im looking for an amp to go with it, I originally had an idea of getting a "Kicker ZX 1000.1" amplifier for it, but the Type R Subwoofer has Dual 4-Ohm Voice Coils, and the Amps power has 1000Watts @ 2Ohms, .. So me not being very smart and all, would the 2 Ohm amp run the 4 Ohm sub?, or wouldnt this really matter? .. im thinking maybe since the amps only got 2 ohms, if i was to connect it to the sub it would then make the amp run at 500Watts @ 4 ohms? .. or doesnt it really work this way? .. thanks guys!

if you have a dual 4 ohm subwoofer, that means it has two voice coils.
this means you can wire those two voice coils to better suit your amp.

in your case, two 4ohm coils, can be wired in series, to make 8ohms, or parallel, to make 2 ohms.

to connect the voice coils in parallel, you simply connect the two positive connections on the sub together, then connect to the positive on the amp, and do the same for the negative.

That amp is stupidly overkill for what your using imo. Unless your planning on upgrading in future you only really need 500rms.

rofl im running an alpine 500watt rms sub off a 1000watt rms monoblock amp. was considering linking another sub but it would the cut the power rating down to 600watt rms from the amp and run each sub at 300watt rms.. can always turn the amp down tho

Yeah of course you can turn it down and lots of people will argue you want tons of headroom but from what I can remember thats an expensive amp ($ per watt) so I'm not sure if it would be the most appropriate option.

agree with joe, no point spending big money on an amp that you will not use..

not even going to get the amp warm..

save some money and get an amp rated at 500wrms @ 2 ohms.
