Would i get decent sound if i ran my splits off the head unit and hooked a sub up to my amp? I only have a 2 channel amp is the problem (50 Watt x2 RMS). Would this work or would the sub overpower the speakers? I have'nt bought a sub yet, but i would like to get one with a bass level dial on it.
Just turn the gain down on the amp until the sub is at a good level with the speakers. If anything is overpowering anything it is the fault of the installer, not the equipment

What head unit?
Most decent units these days include a subwoofer level and low pass filter adjustments, some even have high pass filters for the speakers. If you havent bought the head-unit yet look into one with these features, because you'll be able to adjust the subwoofer level and cut the lower bass frequencies (that the sub plays) from the speakers all from the head-unit.
I wont keep raving on, just have a read of this thead if you havent already.
But yes......to answer you're question, provided the components are good quality and the system is installed and tuned properly it'll sound great in a ute![]()

Righto, i bought a sub, and it is one which has an amplifier in it. Since the sub has its own amp, i would like to keep the splits hooked up to the amp. Now just one question, i need to hook up the remote wire from the sub, so where do i attatch it since i already have the amps remote wire hooked up to the head unit? Or are there two remote wires from the head unit? I have'nt had a good look yet.
You can run as many amps as you like off the 1 remote wire (within reason)

Alright, i hooked the new active sub up to the battery, and i was about to pull the head unit out to connect the remote wire and i had the idea of just hooking the remote wire straight up to the alpine amp which is running my splits, so i have 2 remote wires hooked up to the same amp (this probably is'nt what your meant to do, but i thought id try it to save pulling the HU out). It worked but now when i turn the car off both amps stay on..??? I thought it would be the same thing as merging the two amps remote wires with the head units wire.
What have i done wrong? I had to disconnect one of the amps from the battery so it would'nt go flat.
So you just placed the remote wire for the sub amp into the remote wire socket of the Alpine amp? That should of worked. You sure its not touching the power cable somewhere, as that would make it stay on.
When you disconnect the sub amp remote wire, do both amps turn off?

Hey acarmody, you were exactly right, must have just been one tiny strand of wire from the remote wire touching the power wire. I always put fork terminals on the ends of the wires, but i could'nt find one small enough to put on the remote wire, had a look around in the shed just then and found a packet of tiny fork terminals, so all is good now.
