For those of you wanting to get the steering controls working in a VX/VY after installing a new head unit.
The product you need is a CAT-08 made by Stinger Australia. JB HIFI can order it in (about $130). It works by converting the steering control signal into an IR signal(Same as what your remote uses).
The literature it comes with claims it can mimic the IR signals from the following remote controls.
Alpine RUE-4185
Clarion RCB130 & RCB161
JVC RM-RK50
Kenwood RC410 & RCDV100
Panasonic YEFX992663
Pioneer CXB8743 & CDSR80
Sony RMX115
I can confirm it also works with the JVC RM-RK230 remote - Comes with the JVC KD-AVX1 3" LCD Headunit.
Installation is simple for a VX. On the back of the factory HU plug there is a brown wire (in one of the corners of the plug). This brown wire is the signal wire from the steering controls. Connect it and the ACC and GND off the factory plug to the CAT-08. The little LED that emits the IR signal can be mounted in the interior light above the centre console.
REMEMBER to remove the positive off the battery before you start playing.
The CAT-08 literature (read as single A4 page) also claims to work with VS/VT Barina XC FORD AU1/2/3.

The VS-VT DID come with steering wheel controls on higher class models....if they didn't...I don't know what was on my VS Calais...or my VT Berlina I had for awhile...
You put you left foot in, your put your right foot in , you take your left foot out and you slide it all about!
Does the "little LED that emits the IR signal" mentioned above need to have wiring run to the interior light if mounting it there? How does it work?
I want to keep the steering wheel controls when I get a new head unit but not if there is alot of work involved.
i had mine installed today, they installed it above the passenger handle in the roof, im happy with wot i got, i paid $370 all up to get the IR interface + my headunit installed + Vy facia with pocket,
I put the box itself in the space below and behind the head unit and connected it to the factory plug. The ir signal is sent from an LED attached to a long thin cable. I cable tied the LED cable behind the glove box, ran it up behind the trim near the windscreen. Lowered the centre light and used one of the flexible plastic things electricians use to run wires to pull the led through. Dropped a small hole in the light itself (NOT the diffuser) and poked the LED through pointing it towards the Headunit. Then refitted the light and diffuser.Originally Posted by Chrisd79

anyone got a website for the cat-08 from stinger???? price?? availability??? where to buy???![]()
yeah if n e one can tell us a price that would be cool cheers
The IR units cost between $200 to $250, about $30 to $50 to prof. install..
Does anyone know wether the IR kit works with a JVC KD-LHX505 head unit (remote model RM - RK300)![]()
Hey guys,
I dont mean to hijack this thread but for anyone who has a VY or VZ (maybe even VX) Phreddy has a neat way to connect amps etc to the factory head unit, therefore keeping the steering wheel controls and dashboard display etc. It also lets everything look nice and stock and sounds awsome!
See Phreddy's thread titled:
Blaupunkt low-level outputs? You betcha!![]()
I had a look / listen and Im heaps impressed. Im gonna get him to fit one in my VY SS.
only one problem with that. the stock head unit doesnt play mp3's. scrolling song name, etc...Originally Posted by davey g-force

The CAT currently emulates the JVC Remote model RM-RK50. I'll find out the RM-RK300 uses the same signals.

erm...actually it's pretty simple and if you had of read the FIRST post it was already listed.

You put you left foot in, your put your right foot in , you take your left foot out and you slide it all about!
THE CAT is a different product (better cause it's Australian and no delay) to the PAC.

Ronnie makes the CAT-08. He would be the BEST person to provide feedback on the compatibility of his product.Originally Posted by 12Voltking

SORRY 12Voltking but sometimes you're brutal.
I won't put up with it. We have sponsorship packages which will get him his own little sub forum and a banner at the top for a very small sum that I'm only too happy to send him information about.
Spamming for your own pocket is not accepted. Spamming for someone elses popcket is not accepted either.
ronniem, are you interested in a becoming a sponsor and getting your own sub forum like FIT and the other sponsors?

Ronnie....like everyone else....is just trying to help.Originally Posted by 12Voltking

Attitudes like yours will only result in people who manufacture things like the CAT-08/09 to set up their own website to the detriment of the people that your website is supposed to help.
/me removes personal thoughts about 12Volts attitude
Well, you know it isn't cheap for our administrator to run a dedicated server, pay for the licences to use this software, pay for the domain name and also pay for the advertising of the site.
So, I think when other members pay less then $10 a year to have their own banner and sub forum where people can ask them all the questions they want. Then I really don't see what the issue is.
Personally, I don't get ANY money from this website. Nor do I want any. I get very annoyed when members come in here spamming their products whilst other hardworking businesses like them PAY to get their services advertised.

Hey guys,
We don't want to make waves ... we just wanna help. I signed up to the forum as a fellow Holden enthusiast, interested in hearing about issues people were having with steering wheel interfaces because thats what we do!
12VoltKing, I'm new to forums and from my understanding they are a great source of sharing information. I didn't think mentioning the product a few times (I've only made 11 posts in total) would be classified as spamming. You find a good product, service or idea and tell people about it. People were asking questions and I'd thought I'd help. That's what I thought I was doing, but now I understand where you're coming from.
I was unaware that you had Sponsorship packagages available, therefore we would be interested in receiving some information on that - we'd be more than happy to support the forum.
Thanks
Ronnie
Hey Ronnie, it's perfectly fine. We have a lot of spammers and we try to nip them all in the bud. Your product I see as an advancement but I can't let free advertising continue. If you make money from the forum then why can't the forum owners who is left out of pocket by hundredds of dollars every month. Like I said, you will get a rotating banner like at the top of the forum. It rotates between our sponsors and is viewed at the top of every page.
You will also recieve your own sub forum. Not just a thread but an entire sub-forum like this one.
Here is an example forum that is managed by one of our sponsors.

boardyboy. This is not my forum. Refer to me as a tool again and send an abosuive PM again and I will take action. If you don't like my attitude then use this email address... admin@justcommodores.com.au to make a complaint against me. Before you do, remember that we have more to deal with then petty problems. I'm sure you recieved the mass email sent out by me. So, just be aware that it may take a while before you get a respsonse. But you will get one.
You put you left foot in, your put your right foot in , you take your left foot out and you slide it all about!
I sent it to you in a PM for a reason. You making it public is just funny.Originally Posted by 12Voltking
On the topic of that mass email which is SPAM. I'm sure you are aware of the Australian Spam Act 2003 which came into effect over 1 year ago. You should also note I specifically requested NOT to receive mailouts. Should you wish not to abide by the legislation that's fine but be aware that breaches can incur penalties of up to 1.1million per day that the offence continues.
The correct course of action for ronnies (questionably SPAM) posts would have been to remove his posts and send him a private message referring him to which ever clauses in your use of this site that he is in violation of.
Posting your responses publically is just stupid as it serves no cause other than to belittle someone else. You've made me feel stupid from one of my posts before and it wasn't appreciated. In my opinion you are a tool.
I recommend removing all posts not related to Steering Controls from this thread as they are OFF TOPIC. Including this one
Back on topic.
This Cat thing does look interesting JB Hifi and Strathfields both stock it in Perth but it retails for between 225-250. Seems a bit pricey to me...
I paid about 120 from JB in adelaide...I wouldn't pay more than about 150.Originally Posted by mattyman
